A first 4 the forum?

Post by oldartefact » Wed Feb 21, 2018 6:51 pm

Well after a morning clearing out the partridge pens ... I hit the ridges so to speak ... 25 acres of "smooth as you like" "sandy" and "friendly to the spade" aka "a detectorists dream" soil. .. I can still see the foot prints from my 15 or so previous visits .. nearly all with silver (3 x silver 3d in the same area???)... yes those foot prints ... they are a welcome but haunting reminder of digs done, and the spaces between, of digs yet to come. Its a tatty field this year so I have until the end of March ... to cover the blank bits :) :) :)
So what of today? Well it is the Vale of York .. the stuff of legends ... ghostly soldiers marching their way to Eboracum ... but less of the Roman, this little bit of hot metal is a bit more modern.. but how modern? and what is the back story??? Perhaps this little piece will never give up its history, is it a first for the forum.
it is what it is ... bronze, Deus fast, a chunky bit.
There are a few indistinct markings on the reverse ... one looks like a 2 .. if you get my drift.
Here you go. My feeling is that its about 200 years old???

I think that it is a bit too meaty for that. I suspect it had a wooden handle and was for printing the registration mark onto something like wallpaper or something similar. Great find. ::g

Many thanks everyone, still trying to get my head around all the information, what it was used for? how it was used, when was it made? is it unique or a mass produced item? Cant recall seeing one in the forum before??

Its still a conundrum for me .. I get the kite mark bit, not sure I get how to decypher the code, and not sure how it was used, when or why?
I get the vision of a suited inspector, lazing around the vacinity of the threshing machine, deciding whether the bag of wheat was a good un ... or a bad un???

I guess they must have been pretty tightly controlled, like coin dies. (Have we ever had any of those here?)

I have studied it Allectus, but am still a bit confused... I dont understand why anyone would destroy lace by stamping it ... and "my" item has a letter both sides of the "Reg" whereas the site suggests it should be "numeric" + "Alpha"..

I've tried but the codes suggest the use of both alpha and numeric marks to the left and right of the "R" ... but this one has alpha marks to both the left and the right, so i've drawn a blank so to speak. Quite what this was doing in the middle of a sandy Yorkshire field ... the only lace we do up here is for string vests... is another question!! ::g OooO

Have to admit yours seems a strange one with no numbers and extra letters instead. I havn't been able to find any either with all letters in the corners. Apparently Ripon once had a lace industry and Nottingham (not to far away ) was well known for it.
