Prehistoric Stone Tool? Id or Advice Please

Post by Bottlecapking » Mon Mar 12, 2018 12:39 pm

Hi,

Not your usual find for ID today.

When digging a lovely Constantine II coin, I noticed a piece of flint amongst the dirt. It sat comfortably in my hand and has the remains of what could be a worked edge.

If any of you have any experience that you can bring to bare, I'd appreciate your thoughts.

There are scheduled prehistoric sites within a mile of my location, and the flint was about 4" down.

The land has been worked previously, but is now left fallow.

Regards

BCK

Out of interest, why Neolithic and not earlier?

Although it seems to have some use polishing It doesn't have much patina and the edge retouching looks quite fine. It also helps that I have a site with lots of similar ones on it. As it is a bit crude in form I did actually wonder whether it might even be Bronze Age. :D

PS Much as I love finding worked flints I am no expert and will happily defer to a real expert.

Hemm !!.Al difficult to pinpoint exactly the date...but on the flint tools I have found and had professionally appraised...I would also go along with late Mesollythic..to early bronze age.
Anyway, whatever date is a very, very nice piece of worked flint..(Scraper or also to cutting meat.
Nice find and thanks for posting...good hunting.. ::g

Beautiful scraper there BCK!

Very well found.
I have been lucky enough to find a number of these over the years.
I would say; based on the crudeness, lack of patina and sharpness of the tool, that it is Neolithic to Bronze Age. However, I also am no expert. Well worth showing it to your local Flo for a full assessment and write-up - keep us posted.

Thanks for sharing!
