Hammered and a button identified - but a couple of things still a mystery

Post by Roughwood » Mon Mar 12, 2018 7:35 pm

Hello All,
Last Friday I managed to spend a few hours on my first (although small) permission! To my great surprise, I found a number of interesting things - including a hammered coin. Basically, it's a fairly small field (very interested owners, so may well lead to more - fingers crossed) soon to be drilled. Currently stubbly, very wet and incredibly stony. If I'm lucky, I'll get another crack at it this week...
History-wise, very close by is the site of one of Norfolk's largest Roman cemetaries and just across the road was a WW2 airfield. I've been told that in one spot on the field was a USAF Nissen hut and there is a lot of associated junk in that area, including 50 cal shells and bullets laying on the surface.
Anyway, I started off with the Silver Sabre Plus on All Metal setting, discrimination 3ish and sensitivity 7 - 8. Tried to be methodical but eventually went a bit hap hazard!
The hammered was actually two thirds on the surface - lucky me! Fairly close to that I found the possible pot foot thing (2-3 inches down) and what seems to be some kind of mount thingy (similar depth.) I am sorry for the lousy descriptions!
The buttons were from another area of the field, and the funny switch thing was near to where the Nissen hut stood. Also found a few bits of cutlery near there but very corroded etc.
I dug a lot of iron - despite telling myself not to - hoping they might be interesting artifacts...
Finally, the odd twisted blobby thing caught my eye and I can't bring myself to throw it away. I'm sure it's junk but... Apologies for boring you.

I'd like to see the buttons but as above can't see nothing as I think I need to login to the site you linked to?

The button is an early 1800's Royal Marines Officer's button and the hammered is an Edward London penny...you'll need Allectus to class it for you!

Damn good writeup and nice finds. ::g

As you go along try to guess what is iron. When you get it right every time you can think about not digging some of it. Personally on a site with decent potential like yours I would always dig everything iron bigger than a nail anyway because you never know what it's masking. Also go across the site from different directions, some targets will only ring up from within a few degrees from one direction. Best of luck. ::g

I'm not really that sure exactly what it is. Even when pot legs are clear they can be a swine to date exactly as they were made in a simlar way for the best part of a thousand years. :D
