FINALLY! HAMMERED!

Post by The420Finder » Tue Mar 20, 2018 5:39 pm

hi guys!

So after not being able to get out onto the field all weekend I finally got out today and am I happy I did! ...

iv been detecting on and off for 13/14 years and this is my first hammered! back on the field next door to where I had the bronze brooch and part of what looked like an axe head I was on the very highest point of the field, decided what way I was heading and within 5 metres I had a nice signal, went to put the shovel in and saw this on the top and I knew exactly what it was! iv broken my hammy virginity lol!

iv researched it a bit online I think its a king john short cross? I thought at first it could be because it was irish but all the irish hammered's of that era have a big triangle on them ... I cant find one with 3 dots like mine has between the 'El' and the 'O' so I'm not 100% sure on what it is ... not the greatest condition but for a first it will do indeed!

buzzing ... hopefully someone can ID for me?

thanks!

Congratulations! You’ll treasure that thin disk of silver forever now. Hope you get a few more very soon.

Or at least you don’t have to wait another twelve or so years... x;

Well found !

And contrary to what some people think. Hammered coins are not common finds at all. In some areas, they are a rare as rocking horse poo.

If you keep at it though, eventually you will come across the little blighters.

cheers everyone! B-)

definitely one I will remember in a special place! the views from where I found it are unreal!

Had it confirmed from another source as well who said the same as allectus! spot on ::g

Henry III. 1216-1272 penny, Short cross type, class 8b, Struck 1242-1247.

Makes all those hours worth it and gives me even more confidence in these fields! I heard it had done some hammy's as iv spoke to another detectorist and he showed me some pictures of ones he had but until I saw it for my own eyes I didn't get my hopes up!

Maybe ill keep the compadre and not get the deus ;) haha

That's a great find, well done!

I also had a very long wait until I found my first hammered earlier this year and within a few weeks I had three!!

Hopefully they will now start to flow for you now.

Well done on your find. After that amount of time detecting it is very well deserved.

The spread of hammies around the country varies dramtically. There was a thread about it a bit back, in some areas they are fairly common, while others said about the time they had detected without finding any.
Between locally (North Cotswolds) and digs around the country I am happy with 2 or 3 a year. Mind you I would give an arm and leg for a permission like Meandmyboy above who has already had 34 this year! (I suspect he is detecting an old mint site!)
I know nothing about detecting in NI but it sounds like they are thin on the ground around there.

I’ve just been lucky I’m sure, mine come from three / four sites and I do go about 10 hours every week. You would all fine more than I do if you were here too.

Here is the thread I was thinking of viewtopic.php?f=10&t=98465&p=881403&

As always the bottom line is you have to walk over it to find it. But as a very general rule it looked as if the South East and East Anglia did better than most areas for hammies and that the further you got from London the fewer the finds of hammies. [There were no comments from NI].

But as said some of this comes down to perceptions rather than hard facts, eg if I find nothing I think there are few around here but if somebody down the road constantly finds some on different permissions they would think that they were common.
