Brooches

Post by alloverover » Sat Nov 03, 2018 1:01 pm

Had a couple of decent brooches this week,
rsz_20181103_122201[1].jpg
a complete La Tene III which is a first for me, ive had several La Tene I before but not a III, it dates from 3rd to 4th century B.C so pretty early ::g
rsz_20181103_122239[1].jpg

The other is nice also, its zoomorphic when looked at from the way up it would of been worn, this surely is what the guy who made it must of had in mind, a little serpant or is it a crocodile ?

As for the catchplate,,,,,thats just a shame :D :D ::g

Oh they're nice, I'm still waiting for my first. What type is the third? Looks like it resembles a little harp perhaps

It's a little small in the image but would appear to be the catchplate of a larger one.

Looking again Phil, the middle one in your hand looks more crustacean than reptile. My scampi supper gave me pause for thought :D

Oh Blimey. I love that La Tene III...EXCEPTIONAL. Here in my part of Normandy I have no idea what the Celts..or Romans...were using to keep their clothes together but it sure as hell can't have been brooches. Rare as flippin hens teeth. Or maybe, then as now, the residents were 'careful'.
Maybe your interest and expertise attracts them. I feel a failure. :))

They would of used the same littleboot as im sure you know the La Tene culture covered most of Europe, maybe people in your area were just waiting till the first Brexit was announced by Carausius till they felt frivolous enough to loose things :)) :)).

Exceptional finds indeed, especially the La Tene. I’d argue the point about the natives wearing them everywhere though. Ever detected in S/W Wales ?
Our FLO went to great lengths to record half a Trumpet brooch I found (hardly recognisable) simply because they only have a handful of Roman anything recorded in the area.

Very well found :D
