A mullered Saxon and I didn't even recognise it

Post by fred » Wed May 16, 2018 9:42 pm

My detecting trip out today was slightly different than expected because my detecting partner knackered his back doing real work (he really should know better :D ) so I went out alone.

As normal the fields have plenty of signals but most of it is lead or brass junk with the occasional button thrown in for excitement. I was experimenting with the settings on the Nox so I wasn't paying much attention to what I was actually digging. Eventually a nice signal produced what was obviously a smallish hammy from about six inches down but it was so encrusted with dirt that I couldn't see what it was. The edge was also badly chewed up. Some of the edges of the damage was corroded so it was old but my recovery technique in the hard soil probably hadn't helped its appearance. Anyway it went straight into my finds box with hardly a second thought. We've never found more than one hammered in a day on this site so I knew that the chances were that was my lot and so it proved to be although I did later add a very slick milled shilling.

This evening I finally got around to looking at the coin and my eyes nrearly popped out of my head when I saw the small cross in the middle. It was obviously a Saxon penny, my first in 48 years of detecting. I resisted the temptation to dip it in Cillit Bang and gently cleaned it up just enough to provisionally identify it as Edward the Confessor.

Even though I was digging iffy signals today to check my programme I only dug a few pieces of iron and all but a couple of those had been identified before I dug them. The Nox really is going from strength to strength and to say that I am pleased with it would be an massive understatement. :D

What is it with lovely old coins like this? Two in one week. Beautiful thing and not surprised you were shocked when you saw the small cross.

Well done Fred ::g

P.S. great write up and pics, as usual! Thank you :D

Very nice find. Well done. I've been very lucky to have found a few A/S coins so I can guess how you feel about finding it. When you spot that little Cross it makes you do a double take doesn't it?

Such a pity its now in several bits with the right treatment that could have looked great. A very similar coin was sold at auction for a three figure sum. Always treat every signal like its going to be a gold hammered. :;@

Fantastic find Fred. Shame it broke but, tell you what, I’d be more than happy with a bit off one. As long as it was the bit in the middle :D
