Spoil Heap Finds

Post by Stillburning » Tue Jun 12, 2018 6:05 pm

The farmhouse is being refurbished and I was offered 2 spoil heaps to detect on, one from the garden and the other from the floor of the farmhouse living room.

The first photo shows some items from the garden spoil, typical of what I have found there before, going off the head dress I think the toy soldier is a red Indian but could be an Egyptian , the feet may or may not belong to him.

In the close up at the bottom is a Jeton Rechenpfennig, Nürnberg, Stadt Cornelius Lauffer,1658-1711, also from the garden.

From the house spoil I found the pierced Charles II 1670 penny and Walter Taynton 1651 Gloucester token, I'm particularly pleased with that as it the best token I have found - probably as its not been exposed to any chemicals.

I've got a lot more of the spoil from the hose to go through and really looking forward to it after what I've already found.

Thanks for looking ::g

What a fantastic set of finds you have there and it dates the building and vicinity very well.

Not to mention the diverse nationality of some of them - have you researched the building at all to see what the history is?

You are fortunate to have had the opportunity to scan the spoil - modern housing developments are not so sympathetic when they dig and then lay the concrete...

Well done!

On the fields directly surrounding the farmhouse there are a lot of finds - from BA through Iron Age, Roman, Saxon, medieval right up to the present time. I can speculate that people have been living and working here for a very long time, family lore has it that there was a farm house here in the time of Henry VIII - but unfortunately no documentary evidence until the enclosures maps.

I will keep on seeing what I can find and building up a picture - even if cant be proved :))

Get stuck into those heaps - I am fascinated by what the next installment may hold for you.

Perhaps your time will tell and you may well have proof in your very hands that documents the local history further.

Best of luck.

That's good going there and spoil heaps can be rewarding as you have found out. On my main permission the farm is building a large barn extension over 100 feet. They have removed all the soil and put it in piles at the end of the field. I have been around these large heaps and got a few coins
The best bit is it's all staying on site. So will be going over it once it's spread out :D

Regarding spoil heap finds,a couple of years or so I was fortunate enough to be able to help out on an archaeological dig on a middle ages derilec chapel down here in West Wales.
I was not into detecting at the time as I was much to busy scraping away and helping to exhume skeletal remains.
How ever I will never forget the excitement when a local detectorist pulled out this little beauty from a spoil heap.i think it's a strap end !!... I'm ready to be corrected if I'm wrong.
It was this spoil heap find that got me on to he facinating hobby of Metal detecting.
Good hunting.. ::g
