Handsome big not hunting button maybe duke of Buccleugh Royal Company of Archers connection

Post by Lowland » Thu Oct 11, 2018 10:42 am

Hi
Found a while ago on pasture deep in fox country
and sidelined!
Big sized flat button
Lots of original gilt remains...would have a stab at early to mid victorian date.
I would love to tie it to the local Buccleugh hunt.
The monogram is similar but definately different-
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=buccl ... w7zG7ZcnJM
The hunting horn and arrows certainly point towards a hunting origin..
Anyways-
Thought it was worth a look ::g
Cheers
Had a brainwave...the Buccleuch family are heavily associated with the royal company of archers...,
Might have to take the button up to Bowhill house
It was found less than five miles away in a straight line..

Love that button.

The "B" monogram is very like the Buccleuch hunt one on the car badge that you link to.
Assuming you are correct about the early to mid victorian date the car badge would be quite some time after, and badges can change slightly over time and with one being a button and the other a much larger car badge I would not be put off by the difference.

What does put me off slightly for being the Buccleuch hunt is the arrows, a hunt would not chase a fox with dogs and then try to shoot it with arrows !!

The Duke of Buccleuch Hunt was founded in 1827 by the 5th Duke of Buccleuch who took over the hounds of Mr George Baillie – regarded as the Father of Foxhunting in the north. So the "B" monogram on the hunt badge would be either the same or very similar to one used on the family livery. So even if not a Duke of Buccleuch Hunt button the similarity is good enough to almost certainly connect it to the Buccleuchfamily in some way.

The Buccleuch family being heavily associated with the royal company of archers is a very interesting connection, and I think this could be the clue to the origin of the button.

Rory, do please follow this up and let us know how you get on.

If Fisher1266X wants a coincidence I bred a horse that won at the Duke of Buccleuch point to point races several years back.

Evan

Hi Paul
That’s a lot of sheep on 12000 acres.
Was that in the Scottish Borders?

Hi saffron,
Thank you for your thoughts on the button.
The fox hunt angle is fading-shooting arrows at them would be unusual right enough..
I fully intend to get up to Bowhill on a charm offensive with the button ;)
Father in law is one of the gardeners ::g
See if I can stir up some interest-there aRe one or two fields there
that I really would love to have a spin over...
I will keep you posted..
Cheers
