Charles I Half Crowns ....

Post by PeakDetectorist » Fri Nov 23, 2018 8:56 pm

Hi

I thought I would share with you all a couple of nice finds last weekend, which I am hoping will lead to more!

This small permission of probably less than two acres of old pasture has always been a dream location to detect due to its proximity to an ancient village, it is the closest field you can actually get to the centre of the village and I can't believe its never been detected.

Over the course of three half day trips, I have dug up loads of coins and artefacts Georgian and onwards but have failed to get much older. These finds have included many milled silver coins including a nice George III Half Crown.

On my last trip, it started to get a little more exciting when up popped a lovely Charles I Half Crown, I have never handled one before and was surprised at its thickness. To my disbelief half an hour later another one pops up!! Now the proximity of these two coins would make it very difficult to link them together but as you can imagine I am quite excited about getting out there again!

Up to now I have probably only detected about a fifth of the field, so I know there is lots more to come.

I believe the first one is a Tower Mint 1641-43 (Triangle in circle)

Not as sure about the other, if anybody could confirm it please?

The approximate diameter of the coins is 35mm where unclipped.

Brilliant thanks A ::g . Does that mean the second one is also minted under Charles I. I.e. prior to 1943?
Possibly struck under Parliament. What's the initial mark?

Hi Ken

I agree, I think the field will take several goings over before I can be confindent of clearing areas. It's hard work detecting out here but there is some good stuff to find, it just takes a lot of work on the old pasture.

I am lucky because I know all the local land owners so I have been able to get lots of good permissions, I just wish it would get ploughed as it would be amazing.

Cheers David

A couple of very nice Charles I Halfcrowns! They're sizeable lumps of silver despite the usual bit of clipping and it's a real treat to find two at anytime let alone two during the same session and in the same field::g A great session and I hope and suspect there'll be more of the same to follow. ::g

Good Luck on your further searches ::g Regards ss47

Very nice! I was lucky enough to unearth one last year and was instantly bowled over by the size and weight of it! If I was you I'd be chomping at the bit to get back on there!

Lovely coins, get gridding and better in MHO that it is not ploughed as it would be heartbreaking digging those coins to find them with recent damage.
Well done and keep us posted.
