6 out of 130.

Post by Easylife » Tue Nov 27, 2018 6:10 pm

I had the most unproductive day yesterday on one of my pasture permissions, but still good to get out before the next few days of rain. I dug about 130 targets for just 6 keepers yet they were a most welcome menagerie. There was a 1929 Vicky George V penny in decent condition, a copper alloy finger ring and a purposely defaced George V penny. But the one's that brought a smile upon first sight were a copper alloy cooking pot leg as I quite like these fragments and it's a good sign of older finds being about. Any silver is always cheery so the 1930 silver sixpence was a most welcome find. But the biggest surprise was seeing a clean gold coloured coin in the hole about the size of a gold sovereign, I just stopped and stared at it for a short while fathoming it out. But soon realized that though clean, it was too dull and not quite the right colour for gold - a 1990's Greek 20 drachma coin is a far cry from a gold sovereign. So there were very few good finds and unusually very little lead also, so a funny old day really! The sun was shining and I had the cattle for company. B-)

Easylife were you trying? There is a distinct lack of 4 hole buttons and shotties :)) :))

But it would do all newbies well to look at that selection of finds, and see how the hobby really is and that the gold and hoards that they see in the magazines and other media are very much rare events and not common like some retailers try to make out.

Blimey! Well Dug You! :D That must be equal to at least a tube of Voltarol. ;))
It means that if its there to find you will find it. Looking forward to seeing you rewarded for all that dedication to the cause. Not to mention the Free Scrap Removal Service. (I have removed so much over the years I am thinking I should charge for it.)

I haven't worked out your Detecting Bingo score for this effort...but your must be getting close to a Full House.

Great to see a realistic day's finds ::g

You've prompted me to do what I've been threatening to do for a while, namely to count the number of targets dug. Not sure it'd be as many as 130 on average but possibly not far short.
Essential equipment:
Some sort of electrical gubbins(I'm told it's a Deus). In various colours

Thanks Easylife, certainly makes me feel better about my typical finds ratio!

Just one pedantic point... 1929 is surely a George V penny not a Viccy...

Hi Evan, there was just one 4 hole button but no shotties at all - I'll try harder next time! :))

I'm hoping it is Victorian with a date of 1929 or even misread at 1829 8-| both would be very welcome finds indeed!!

Hi Jan, No need for Voltarol, it's all down to good technique. :D
I am quite hoping it will pay off with some interesting finds.
Oh yes, the all prize detecting bingo, not sure that I have enough variety of finds there? :))

Crikey, that is both realistic and frightening at the same time! I've never counted the number of holes, but I would have been crackered long before that. I have to admit that I still enjoy finding a nice Viccie - despite feeling a bit inadequate after seeing the gems on here! What it the lead item Easy?

Wow i was cursing the 26 shotties I dug in one 2 hour session a couple of weeks ago :D

Realistic though on a new busy area. Clear the junk and get to the good stuff they say. I’ll sit back to see if you can test the theory and report back for me :-*

Hi Brad, do you mean the Medieval cooking pot leg? Bottom right are several pieces of lead sheathed electric cable, which just the thought of alone is quite scary! And just some other small lead blobs. Most of it is aluminium greenwaste, grrr! :D

No problem Cath, I have new found inspiration. About a hundred worked flint implements were found here eyes only after rain when it was cultivated land long, long ago. So I'm now looking out for some when I dig, how fun is that? :D

Worked flint? Wow thats always cool. I enjoy flint finding as much as metal detecting these days. Found another bit of a flintlock pistol striker the other day. A different style one though. But i scour the ground for them.

Please report back if you find any ::g :D

Hi Saki, It was very tough at first and had to approach it with a fresh mindset after a good break from it, it just needs to be done though. ::g

Looks like my finds bag from our new permission. Lots of rubbish but 78 coins in four visits, ranging from Roman Republic to modern 5p (the tiny ones).
Still, they all count as we say and the field is better for removing the scrap! ::g

That is some serious digging , 130 holes , you would be just the man I need on a bottle digging quest with that amount of digging .
I must admit , where I am detecting , the ratio is not quite as high as far as scrap compared to "finds" so it is a good indication comparing the reality of metal detecting . Equally so , I would still be happy with little gems you have found amongst the rubbish and no doubt somewhere amongst the scrap is that elusive gold sovereign , I hope so . Well done .
I walk , I dig , I find ....naff all !
