1st Hammered Coin, Elizabeth 1st Sixpence.

Post by Dave The Slave » Wed Nov 28, 2018 2:38 pm

After last week and the Republican Denarius, was not expecting to find anything worth posting.
In fact had prepared a post in my head about the mashed up Crotal bell, I did not realise I had found but was spotted by Steve T and Littleboot.
Making my way over to last weeks area found a coin early on, just under the surface and looks to be a Georgian Farthing. That would have sufficed for the day as I don`t find many coins and a coin is a bonus. Low expectations , means low disappointment.
Arrived at the area and started the next grid, shotties were keeping me warm with the digging but they need to be dug as the 85/6 signal on the 400i, could be a coin .Within half an hour, think I had an 83 signal but I tend to dig regardless of the numbers. Around 3" down uncover a disc, looks like a blank disc, turn it over and can just make out 3 Lions in one quarter of a shield. Interesting !
Pour some water over and can make out more of the shield but that was all. Pour some water into the recovery spot and say "Thank You " more than once and continue for another couple of hours. Plenty of shotties, some chunks of Agricultural metal, couple of bits of lead and an undistinguishable button.
Once again, could not get home quick enough to do some research. Think I knocked a minute off last weeks journey time, due to an extra green light, green means GO,Go,Go and so I did.
Back at base, internet on, magnifying glass, ruler and scales out and lets see what the coin is. Firstly a rinse under the tap and I spot a date above the shield, that is a bonus. Appears to be 1569 but the final number is very feint, even under magnification,. Measure the diameter which cami in just above 20mm and the weight is 1.5 gm, scales were checked after reading subsequent coin info.
Nearest match was an Elizabeth 1st, Half Groat but I could only find info they were minted in 1560/1, so date was 1560 then, fair enough. Weight 1.5g was too heavy for the examples I found, so will have to leave the final ID to the FLO next year. Pictures are not that great, one side is virtually blank and the Shield side is the best after several attempts.ImageImage
Well this is my 1st hammered coin and as yet anything Elizabethan. Also my 1st English Silver of any type, never even found a pre 1947 Silver coloured coin. 3rd Silver of the year, others were French and Roman, added to a Rome Denarius 2 years ago , the total is now 4.
So for me a successful season but I go out not expecting much and every find is a bonus.
Good Luck all ::g
Dave.

Great stuff and well done, Dave ::g ::g ::g

First sight of that dull glint in the clod is something which you'll always remember. I have an affinity with you in that my first hammered was the same coin, dated 1567.

Now go get some more :D

Great write-up, thank you and well done! Particularly liked the libation to the findspot, although the gods of detecting might have preferred something a little stronger ;))

Best of luck for more silver to come!
