First day on new land.

Post by Easylife » Tue Dec 04, 2018 10:53 pm

I am lucky to have lots of pasture land to detect on but wanted some cultivated land for a change so I phoned a farmer who owns a massive field of over 50 acres near mine which is planted up with what I guess is winter barley or similar and now about 3 inches high so I was really thinking for after it was harvested. My pre planned spiel was not required as he immediately just said yes you can go on it now and to just fill your holes in. So not wishing to look a gift-horse in the mouth I was right on it within the hour.
Due to the field's massive size I only covered a relatively small part of it first trip. Targets were very plentiful so it doesn't seem to have been detected before, most were the usual scrap and some green-waste though not too bad - and there were these....
The dozen copper coins were welcome but I was pretty chuffed when the 12th century harness pendant showed undamaged.

There was a post medieval cast decorated slider of sorts. And the pot leg and vessel fragment were good signs also. I was thinking about how I had not found a watch-winder in ages, and then one suddenly appeared showing advertising for the jewellers shop. A buckle chape without the buckle and a thin piece of patterned silver which passed the foil test. A strange spelter horn of sorts, hollow but heavy. A Queen Alexandra's Cup Bronze Shooting Medal for the 'Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs' showing Field Marshal Lord Roberts of Kandahar, from about 1907. A 6mm thick chunk of copper alloy showing a pattern of circles on both sides but not sure if old or not. A couple of lead weights. A copper dagger chape. A 'Great Northern Railway' button. A button & looped fastener that I'm struggling with as it shows a different design to the Iron age and Roman ones. A pigeon ring dated 1927. Then a very small copper alloy button, which when cleaned turned into a very thin and tiny coin of just 12.5mm diameter showing a young Victoria's head but the reverse doesn't seem to fit the quarter farthing's and it's about 1mm smaller that that. The reverse appears to show a rider and rearing horse and below the date line a word which perhaps says 'COUNTER', so maybe it's just play money?

So not a bad first day really, it seems a good field that has a lot more to give.
Any thoughts on the above items are most welcome.

Edit: Here's the circle design thingy.

Hello Easylife, ::g That's a fine spread of finds you've made there which bodes well for a potentially very productive site. ::g

Due to the fields massive size" - Very nice, so finds are not going to 'dry-up' any time soon are they?
I'd say you have a great situation there ::g Good Luck. Regards ss47

That’s a corker of a permission. You’ll be enjoying that field for many years to come. Bet you wish it wasn’t seeded now. I certainly would be :D

Great finds and brilliant pictures!

OMG what a stroke of luck, you lucky devil. Finds from the Iron Age through to Geo 3rd and more to come.
Only draw back with cereal crops (I know) is you have limited access through the year. I have a complete farm and all they do with it is cerials & silage. Only the steepest couple of fields are used for grazing. All intense farming, one crop off another strait in with slurry in between.
Your 50 acres looks great, get in there, QUICK ::g

p.s. You’ve got the 1st months research already :D

Well, the finds of my second visit today were not so good. I expanded the initial search area and had loads of targets, I must have dug about 200 of them, maybe 50% were aluminium, plus the usual scrap and a fair bit of lead. There were only about 20 or so keepers but nothing special.
Even so here's the more interesting of them...
P1070166.JPG
But my favourite of the day is this tiny 10mm advertising button maybe depicting a horse. I think it reads 'D.A & Co' but can't make out the bottom bit.
P1070167.JPG

Still barely scratched the surface of it though. So just an off day I hope. ::g :D

As you say, interesting. I like the little candle snufer. It seems to have something on it, initials maybe ?
Top right, is that lead. It reminds me of my Bronze Age Unit but that is bronze.
Nice finds again. Sounds like a lotta lotta digging though. :(

I thought of describing them all but didn't really think it warranted it, but they are all quite small. Top right is a Medieval lead token with the pellet cross. Bottom left is shaped like a candle snuffer but is it too small? It has '80' on it but need more pics to show it well. Then we have a cast copper alloy piece set in iron. Then maybe 3/4 of a pendant. x;

Wouldn't mind seeing a bigger pic of the 'candle-snuffer' shaped jobber. That is the find from this set that catches the eye.
It doesn't half seem like a lot of digging but it remains very promising. The tells are all there for some really good stuff amongst the toot.
Who needs a fancy Gym membership eh? Think of the money you are saving.

It's a Victorian pencil sharpener.
