Just for fun - Holiday finds - 3 items claimed by the Scottish Treasure Trove.

Post by Swany » Wed Dec 05, 2018 5:42 pm

Guy's, these were found 3 years ago while on holiday right next to Loch Ness, asked the holiday park owner if OK to detect fields next to the site.

I found all of these with the CTX 17" coil tadpole pattern, can't wait to get back there.

Was wondering if anyone can guess which 3 items were claimed??

I would guess the dated item, what looks like part of an annular brooch and what looks like the ornate lid from a nested set of weights (?) and is very nice.

Top of the list has to be the 10p ::g ::g ::g OooO
Not quite sure how any of the other items could be considered treasure??

I like your style Oldartefact, treasure is in the eye of the beholder, does it need to be silver or gold?

The findspot is very close to Culloden. :D

Well, this is my thoughts ......

A Scottish Celtic annular broach. Or possibly Viking!😁.. as we can’t see the face of the possible broach, we’ve to rely on instinct and not the old 1000 yrs or so πŸ˜‰, so my guess would be.... VIKING!

The second, I’d guess and say...... the circular Artifact below the 10p, is part of a rare early
Anglo-Celtic Annular ring broach, made of Bronze.

And my last guess for the 3rd is...... either the Bronze scissors or the tooth bitten Lead musket ball, I’m I’m going with..... the Circular lead weight, probably Celtic. (bottom left) 😁.

The ring thing that looks like an annular brooch, the dated thing top right and the musket ball that looks like it might be decorated or something else weird like that.

Good game btw :D

12 silver hammered coins (1 in 2016; 7 in 2017), just 4 so far in 2018 (but did find 1 gold coin :D )

Oxgirl is correct.

A brooch, a chewed teeth marked musket ball and a numbered plate from a flint lock pistol. ::g

Many thanks for the link JCM ... so any "any ownerless objects found by chance or through activities such as metal-detecting, field-walking, or archaeological excavation become the property of the Crown and therefore may be claimed as treasure trove", in my book that would mean that no objects are treasure, since all objects (found by chance or otherwise) are currently owned by someone, a musketball found on a field owned by Mr.Smith is owned by Mr.Smith, the idea that the musketball is ownerless beggars belief.
And the find has to be of "cultural significance" am trying hard here to understand why a chewed musket ball could be considered to be culturally significant, to anyone other than a biologist?? Hey ho.
