Bristol Farthing Token.

Post by JBM » Thu Dec 06, 2018 10:27 am

This Punch and die produced 1651\2 Bristol Brass token popped up this week. CB = Civitas Bristollie.

Only a few miles from where it was produced and spent.

Quite a lot of civil war era items have come from the find area I wonder if they left it behind.

I still swear by Gary B`s XP Deus Sifter settings. ;)

Happy Hunting,

Jerry.

A nice little nugget of local history there, Jerry ::g

I've found a few of those recently and have managed to get the name of the local merchant that they were struck for on each occasion, from the initials on the token.

That's an unusual and nice find Jerry, you seem to have the knack of finding the unusual.
A lesson for us all there, don't go chasing finds with fancy programmes or settings, refine your programmes with your ears, learn what your machine is telling you.

I also have one of those which I found recently in West Dorset, bizarrely alongside a Norwegian coin of about the same date.

I have 3 or 4 of these and adore them. Little snapshots of local history. Great find ::g

12 silver hammered coins (1 in 2016; 7 in 2017), just 4 so far in 2018 (but did find 1 gold coin :D )

Thanks for your kind comments.

My previous Bristol Farthing tokens have dates usually around the 1660 era.

This example carries no date and weighs 2.5 grams and is earlier. but thanks to a friends reference book I learnt that it was the earlier type.

There is also reference to cast counterfeits that were in circulation

Happy Hunting,

Jerry..
