First trip out of the New Year and 3 hammered More Groat Pics

Post by f8met » Sun Jan 06, 2019 11:55 pm

As it as been fairly dry I decided to go out for the first time this year. Driving the hour to my permission, weather was overcast, 10 miles out started to drizzle. I hoped it was passing over as most fields are in crop and being clay I don't like walking over crop when it is too wet. Went to the field which is hammered heaven and first signal about 50m from the car was loud, hitting about 80 on the deus so wasn't expecting hammered but out came this Edward III London Groat about 4 inches down. Not much else came up so went over to the field next door. This seems to be a field of halves and sure enough the London half appeared.

Thought I would wander over the adjoining field which is another nice one but was lacking today. Heading back, got a nice signal and the Lizzie half groat, 6th issue came up. As usual the face is pretty poor.

I went off for dinner with the landowner showing him my finds from today and the last 2 weeks and he has been chatting to a friend of his and he said he is happy for me to detect his land. Bonus is it is only 20 minutes away.

And just for fun, found this bit of wheat struggling growing through a shotgun cartridge! I have a few pictures like this, going to send them to treasure hunting.

That's different! Looks as though the die sinker has used the initial cross 1 puncheon for the 'X' of REX on the groat.

Well done! ::g

It's a pre-treaty, 4th coinage, series B/C mule.

Another odd feature is the colon stops after EDWARD: and REX: ::g

Many thanks for the replies. I will try to get a better picture of the groat. I had noticed the extra initial cross. I have been gently straightening it.

Yep, B/C mule. Open E's obverse, closed on the reverse & initial mark cross 1 puncheon used for the 'X' of REX....interesting! ::g

Lovely pictures displaying a lovely (and unusual it appears) coin l;.

Must be wonderful to have a field full of silver. OK that might be an exaggeration but one with a good chance of finding stuff :D ::g Enjoy it.
