Gold! Henry VIII half-crown

Post by bazzerhut » Sun Feb 10, 2019 10:40 pm

I so nearly didn't dig this, because it gave exactly the kind of signal that always (until now) turns out to be coke, with a near-vertical line on the Deus x/y display and a very short mid-tone blip on the audio. (GMP program, unmodified apart from raising the frequency of the high tone.)

20 mm in diameter, dug from a depth of 4" or so, in a very muddy harvested sugar-beet field.

Perhaps it was rolled up to wear threaded on a cord around the neck? (Or for snorting that Tudor marching powder.)

Dammit, now I'm going to have to dig sackfuls of bloody coke...

Gold hammered! Wow, we all dream of that but the signal is worrying, coke on my Deus is around 28-30 and a vertical line so like you said perhaps we need to dig out the coke as it just could be gold..

Well done, a stunning find..

Purposely rolled for some reason, for a lock of hair from a loved one, lost one or child perhaps

Well found and saved ::g ::g

I'm discussing this with an excellent local goldsmith at the moment. If I were already spoilt for gold coins, I'd actually leave this one as it is, because the rolling is such an interesting humanising feature of the find and its story. But I'm not, so I'm going to have to gloat over it in its full spreadeagled glory.

I would at least get it recorded with the FLO before unfolding. If it was me I would leave it as us. Done for a reason and is is lovely as is.

That's unusual, for sure. Make sure you have plenty of decent photos of it as it is, before you get it worked on. Both for your own record, and some with measurement scale etc that are 'PAS ready'.
Clean what dirt you can off with warm water / cotton bud / soft brush etc, then a session in an ultrasonic cleaner should help shift the rest. You'll need it spotless before the blowtorches hit it.

Of course, FLO will see it exactly as it is now, and again afterwards. As for the unrolling, it's a tough call. I haven't jumped either way yet, but I'm tending towards having it done.

Yes, this was very salutary, and also really quite annoying. I'd become rather proud of the (hitherto) unfailing accuracy of my coke diagnostics...

Yes, I can 100% feel the same, as it is it is an intriguing item and has its own uniquecharacter, more to talk about. But I suppose everyone will always assume that it could not be rolled out and say "Such a shame its all rolled up" :(

I would rather dig 50 pieces of Coke and not miss that! Great find. Dr Martin Allen at the Fitzwilliam has been researching rolled coins of the Early Medieval period. He may have an angle on later coins like yours?

Lovely find....from memory (2012) I had a similar situation but not curled mine woz on a hen 8 angel it woz a curl bend on its self...the Flo had opened up slightly ....so me being me ...what the worst that can happen....put it in boiling water for a minute ..took out ..and slowly un peeled it ...finishing up with a rolling pin .... no creases superb.... In your case I'd have to get it out of the house or I'd be so tempted to have a go ... ::g worrying about signal Id though...ummmmmmm

I would be very torn too as regards to straighten or leave. Fantastic coin left or un folded

I use deus lite and as for the coke, I have always thought that cut quarters can sound a bit like coke, I always dig coke, Every time and must have 60-70 quarters to show for it. And strangely they are generally found around coke.

So were the numbers in the low range like coke normally is? If it is a good signal an in the low 30s down to the 20s then I do leave them. I would have thought this up in the 70s-80s on the target ID.

That is a fantastic find, well done.
That is the first one I have seen that has been rolled on purpose, and that is the history of the day right there. If it were mine I would leave it rolled, there are plenty of unrolled hammered out there to look at. But as you say it is your call. ::g
