Great photos of a lovely find. ::g
Just out of interest, if this beautiful coin was to be straightened professionally, what sort of cost would you be looking at?

The desciion as is or as was originally is yours to make ::g

Hope you have it recorded as is and provide images as was after the unrolling process as it's contextual to the unique piece

Fantastic find! ::g

If it were mine, I'd have it recorded as is, but afterwards I'd have to get it straightened to admire it in all its glory.

Mine they partially opened up when it went to the Flo....so u never know how it might come back....mates cousin sent a load of axe heads in they got lost and never found !!!!! ::g

Wow. No issues at all with our FLO - items are collected at the monthly club meeting and always returned at the next one (unless treasure, obviously) in the same condition as supplied.

Dr Martin Allen at the Fitzwilliam has been researching rolled coins of the Early Medieval period. He may have an angle on later coins like yours?

Funnily enough, I'm just about to e-mail him on some other scores (a Stephen penny and an Edward the Confessor cut half), so I'll certainly be picking his brain on this one too.

In your case I'd have to get it out of the house or I'd be so tempted to have a go

Yes, it's an urge I'm having to fight quite hard. In principle it should be a pretty straightforward job, having become very adept at straightening mangled silver hammies with repeated cycles of annealing, quenching and teasing.

Even allowing for Henry's notorious debasement, this gold should be pure enough to be far more pliable than most silver, and I have a good steady hand (I was a clocksmith in a former life), but I don't think I'd take any chances all the same.

So were the numbers in the low range like coke normally is? If it is a good signal an in the low 30s down to the 20s then I do leave them. I would have thought this up in the 70s-80s on the target ID.

It was way down there in the 30s, I'm afraid. Unsurprising, really, given the relative depth and the possibility that this slender tube may have been standing upright.

I have no idea at this stage, but I'll let you know after I've talked some more with the goldsmith.

Nah, it sounds like you coaxed it with a proper slow hand. Gently gently gets most things nicely done.
