Nudged into finding the 1st gold of the year

Post by fred » Mon Feb 11, 2019 3:05 pm

A day or two ago Easylife asked me why I hadn't posted a gold ring for a while. The answer was fairly obvious - because I hadn't found one! I haven't actually managed to get out detecting much at all this year due to other commitments and 3 weeks of flu. Even when I have been out the sessions have generally been just a couple of hours. Despite that I've had some pleasing, if unspectacular, bits and pieces.

This morning I felt inspired to get up reasonably early so I did a recce of the local beaches. The recent storms seem to have blown most of them pretty flat but I eventually ended up one which had the odd cut or two along the shoreline. Finds were sparse but at least I was getting signals and even a few coins towards the petrol costs. Whilst trapsing between cuts across a large area of loose sand a small 10 signal threw up a tiny gold ring from only about four inches down. I initially thought it was junk but it is actually 22ct and weighs exactly 1 gram, although unfortunately the stone isn't real. Ah well, at least now I'm up and running in the gold stakes. :D

Really nice set of finds! Were they all from the beach? I don't know why, but I'm surprised to see hammies and a thimble coming off a beach... :) Shows how much I still have to learn!

No they were from land. Only the ring was from a beach! ::g

Well my diamond tester only moves 1 click so pretty sure that it's not a diamond. I've noticed that a quite a lot of decent carat Indian jewellery has rubbish stones in it. :D

The was a single tide after the wind died down where the beaches were just about ok. The trouble is that they were cut a lot further earlier in the year by storms as well as bulldozed full again so almost everthing is either buried deep or long gone. ::g

Hi Fred,

Sorry to hear about your flu. Glad your over it and out and about.

Those finds would have me ecstatic. I’m planning on getting back to land permissions within the next few weekends. This Saturday I’ve got a small workshop to try that was built in 1800’s before it’s demolished on Monday. Think the iron bias will be set to 0 and listen at the sounds between.

I was scuba training in the pool Saturday morning but managed to get two hours where we met before dusk.

Really loving the Nox to bits.

In first two mins found an intact 1940 303 shell, then a 80% 303 shell soon after. 4 impacted 303 buletts, 20p, 50p, an earring stud and a few other things like buttons, small bracelet adornments.

Sorry to rest of forum, not exciting stuff for you I’m affraid, but to me was a real great couple of hours playing with settings and finding small things deep.
