Odin's Wish?

Post by J_digger » Wed Mar 13, 2019 9:39 pm

anglo scandinavian.jpg
A pleasant and rare surprise from Lincolnshire. This wonderful Lead alloy Anglo Scandinavian brooch was found on a farm that I have detected for almost 30 years. Funny that it is only in the last 10 years that we have begun to find evidence of the Vikings. Has Odin given us permission to take a glimpse into his Kingdom?

No problems and thank you for helping me Oxgirl. It is an usual beast who's design is a fusion of Anglo Saxon and Eastern Scandinavia/Russia!

Interesting comment about the Viking stuff on starting to be found 10 years ago..How deep are they generally found?

Anything of note happen ten years ago? New, better detectors? Change in farm practice? Maybe more ploughing?

Great question! I've been talking with one of my buddies and we believe it is a combination of new machines in my case Tesoro to XP, more experience and better knowledge of our farm. I do believe that positive mental attitude helps with our hobby. I remember some years when I struggled to find much because I had a double bereavement. Life feels better now so I think I am able to contrate more. I work in Mental Health and I believe that this hobby does help me to cope (escape) ?

Much better with the new photo. That’s an amazing find. Imagine that in gold or silver.
As for taking so long to find it I do love the idea of things a avoiding the detector, imagine fields getting totally cleaned out, what would we do apart from, new field, move one, then run out.
Well done

Splendid find.
Very interesting comments on finds showing up after a long wait and why that is so.
I think having a permission for a long time is a whole different experience to having one for a season or two. It is something you can't explain....and there is no glib answer either. Like you say, you get to 'know' your permission and its amazing how things can suddenly pop up after many many hours over many years.
I have a 'celtic' field on one of my permissions. It was 5 years before I found anything Celtic at all. But every so often..I.E once or twice a season... now it does throw up something of that era.
I think its a combination of things. Yes a different machine can help...but it doesn't explain improved finds with a machine I have had several years. Sometimes a new setting is the key and sometimes just the direction I am walking. I suppose the plough sometimes cuts a little deeper as well and that makes a difference. But I also think that since finding something good on a field that seemed pretty poor I have been investigating signals I'd never usually bother with on virgin ground.
GMP, Tesoro Invincible, wellies.

I agree the possibilities are endless and fascinating even if you have to walk over the signal in the end.... I remember having bets on who would get coin or artifact of the day, the prize was being able to use the shower at the b&b first!! I have a work colleague who seems to be able to stop clocks without touching them, I am happy with having a Magnetic personality!
