What’s your gold tally?
When I started detecting around 4 years ago I wondered when I would find my first gold. It took quite a while.
My first one came right out of the blue. Detecting in a small 2 acre pasture field, that wasn’t really coming up with anything, out popped a beautiful gold gilded Anglo Saxon chip carved brooch. Even without the gold it would have been an incredible find. The TTU in Scotland have claimed it and very unlikely to see it again.
I had some time to go before the next one popped up. Detecting a field that had already produced some nice hammered’s I found my first solid gold. It was a late 1600’s early 1700’s posy ring with a fabulous inscription.
A little while later I found a silver and gold fob. This was followed just a tad later when I found a rose gold pocket watch winder. I nearly missed that one as the signal was so ‘quiet’!
My best gold though was a solid gold hack fragment of a Bronze Age bracelet!! which I found in a pasture field very close to my home village. Infact I can actually see the field from my kitchen window!! I’d detected the area on many occasions so I was gob smacked when I found it. Hoping it was from a hoard I searched the area over the next 3 days but sadly to no avail.
And just last week I found my first gold coin, a half sovereign of Queen Victoria. Gave a really subtle signal so what a big surprise that was!!
There’s nothing quite like finding gold.
What a great hobby this is!!

In 3 years I've been lucky enough to find
a guinea, 4 sovereigns a half sov and a Victorian silver medal woth rose gold not unlike the one pictured.
A gold hammered or a ring are high onnth3 bucket list but I have no expectations.
A.gold Celtic coin is probably top of the list but I'm not going to hold my breath for that one.

Over 40 years in and I've never had a gold coin, I had a modern wedding ring the first week I got my detector, a gold Roman earing but my biggest gold find was a full thick pure gold denture plate but foolishly I removed the ivory teeth to sell it, though I got a good price for it now being older and wiser realize it was a rare item and would have been worth more than it's weight in gold.

You and me both on the many years and no gold coin, though I've had various bits of jewellery over the years, the ring being the oldest.dondo wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 7:33 pm Over 40 years in and I've never had a gold coin, I had a modern wedding ring the first week I got my detector, a gold Roman earing but my biggest gold find was a full thick pure gold denture plate but foolishly I removed the ivory teeth to sell it, though I got a good price for it now being older and wiser realize it was a rare item and would have been worth more than it's weight in gold.

Not much over a long time,Gold is just so overrated.
Maybe these maps and legends?
I've been very fortunate over 43 years of detecting a Roman gold finger ring and a Posey ring and as luck would have it an 1870 gold half Sovereign of Queen Victoria found yesterday morning this makes it 11 gold coins now good hunting everyone

Nice thread and thanks for sharing your finds. Always a pleasure to see some old gold.
I have found a couple of modest gilded artefacts but in my mind they don’t quite qualify for the ‘gold’ definition seeing as the base metal is different.

Four years of intermittent detecting and still patiently waiting for that magical moment
Although saying that I have totally enjoyed myself looking
