Roman and Iron Age
What a great day I had! So, I thought for a change I’d go to an area of the field which I detect less as it is trashy but not far from where I have found a few Roman coins and a couple of potins.
It wasn’t long before I got a loud high signal and thought it would probably be a chunk of shrapnel but was so happy to see a nice deep green Faustina sestertius appear. Most Romans I find are in a sorry state but this one looked great. I remember thinking to myself, if this makes you this happy imagine how you would feel if you found gold!
Well, not long after that after much slower swinging I had a dodgy whisper of a signal but thought I’d give it a go. It was quite deep and I first saw the flat surface of the coin and thought it was a shiny scrap of copper because of its pink hue. I knew what it was when I turned it over and cleared the dirt away to reveal a lovely little quarter stater!
All alone in a field full of sheep dancing around like a mentalist!
It’s a Cantiaci ‘late weald’ type. My second Celtic gold coin. So chuffed!!!
