Looking Back, Detecting With Dad, The Tiny Gun

Post by stanslad »

Snow outside,so having a play & look with bits dug up over the years, came across the first of the 2 toy guns (or petronels) me & Dad found, I keep a digging diary with detecting & bottle digging notes in about the days, had a read of the saturday it was found in march a few years ago & we nearly didn't get it as I thought we'd be told to sod off by the farmers wife, Dad is nearly deaf, due to over 20 years drilling & blasting explosives at local quarries many years ago & not much PPE or health & safety back then, we have a signaling system we use when we're out,but it's still hard work with him sometimes,as you'll read,
We arrive at farmyard , the farmers wife is allways misarable here & likes us to knock at door on our visits so she knows what fields we'll be in & that we don't upset her horses, Dad knows she's moody & she say's the same thing to him every visit, whever it's raining or sunny " morning Stan, nice day for it" & Dad allways said the same thing back "great lovely, what could be better on a day like this" we even joke & say it all on the way because it's allways the same every time, apart from this day, I get out & leave Dad putting his boots on, the farmers wife is outside & looking upset, she tells me her father had past away last nite & she's sorting out stuff,I tell her we're sorry & we'll go,but she said just carry on & go detecting as he was allways interested in the history of what we found, I'm walking back to Dad at the van as I hear her say to Dad that her father died last nite, I'm thinking oh no he won't hear whats she's saying, please don't say a word Dad,don't say a word, when he replies what he allways say's "great lovely, what could be better on a day like this" I turn around to apologise because he didn't hear what she said & expecting us to be told to go & not come back, when I see she's laughing as she knew he didn't hear her, so I go back to the van & tell Dad to get in, "what's up,what's going on" he asked, I say "shut up & get in the bloody van & you can go & get a bloody hearing aid sorted next week" so of to a damp pasture we go between the railway & river & find this little beauty, copper alloy with dot design down barrel, about 8 inches down, the detector back then was a Whites XLT, hope your still awake!
Thanks for reading

=)) A good tale well told. Enjoyed that. I bet there's enough people on this forum with some interesting/funny stories. Would be good to get a few into a book, 'Detecting tales' I'd buy a copy.

Nice story Clint.

From working in the hearing aid profession and having a dad that has a noise induced hearing loss there certainly can be some funny scenarios you end up having to deal with! :) :))

Thanks for sharing.

Great story, I can relate to your dad, when your hearing isn't perfect you tend to smile and nod your head a lot rather than continually saying pardon
