Hammered Gold!!

Post by PeakDetectorist » Sun Feb 04, 2018 8:34 pm

I was planning on going detecting with my son this Sunday afternoon but as he was unwell, I was unsure whether to bother. By mid afternoon, with nothing much else to do I thought sod it and off I went on my own for a couple of hours in the search for my first hammered. I am very happy that I did!

I have been detecting in a family owned field (pasture) which I have done before many years ago but it still keeps throwing things up. Anyway, I had only been out for 5 minutes and I got an iffy signal and as I am still learning with the Deus, I had to dig it up and there it was about 7" down! I believe a Half Noble, possibly Henry VI?? Somehow the first hammered coin I have found is a gold one!!

My first hammered silver wasn't far behind as I later found a silver Groat at the same depth, not a great distance from the other.

Any further information on identification would be much appreciated.

Allectus, many thanks for your excellent identifications, I have spent ages trying to fully identify the coins myself but just couldn't do it!!

It is about 26mm across which I believe makes it a half noble?

I have found many hundreds of coins before but nothing much older than 300 years old. Around where I live it is all rural but the land is never ploughed and it is very difficult to get deep enough.

There is loads of history from Roman times onwards but I was starting to doubt that I would ever get deep enough for anything decent. I really can't express how delighted I am!

Hi!

I am still experimenting with my Deus and the signal was a little scratchy. I was in GMP mode adjusted to 12MHz which I have found a little more successful and all I can remember is thinking that it was diggable but not a cert with no ID number or reading on the control.

When I located the coin it was at a bit of an angle which probabaly explains the not great signal.

The worrying thing is that if it had been later in the day I might not have dug it!

My Dad bought 10 acres of land next to where we lived when i was a kid and thankfully he kept it.

It is in the Peak District and I know the area has lots of history but maybe more than I realised. I'm just hoping that there is more still to come! :D

I was just saying how much I appreciate Spanish hammered coins, and had never found an English one to compare them with, but your pictures are next best thing to finding one.

Those are two beautiful coins... much thanks for the sharing.
