The next episode of "Down Digging Lane" should take place tomorrow, as long as the snow doesn't get any worse. And if all is Ok I shall be heading west down the M4 towards Royal Wootton Bassett, for a Rotary Club charity rally. So watch this space ::g

I have a feeling your going to have a Roman find or two, and high chances of a Brooch, you've been held back with the weather, it was all meant to be to give you the get up and go to go and achieve the possible.

Best of luck and fortune

I have not been out in weeks due to one thing or another. I will be going to the lp dig on Sunday and the excitement is starting to set in, thinking about all the things I might find. But come Sunday I think the reality will be that of the 15 fields that have been marked out for detecting I will choose the one with diddly squat to be found then on leaving will hear that a field over yonder was giving up treasure and hammies to all and sundry. :D

That was a tough day, and nothing to report. I did see a nice Roman spear head come up to a guy from France, all I found was a small spectacle buckle, and a tiny pewter Tudor button.

Always in the wrong field x;

Out near Castle Coombe in Wiltshire today for my 8th "down digging lane" and again I have nothing to report, well I did get one small buckle, and a ship halfpenny, but that was it for me. It was wet, it was muddy, it was cold.
I used the Nox 800 again, oh now as I type this the sun comes out! B| oh well/ it was good to bump into Bob79, and it was nice to see some nice Roman coins and brooches that were found by others.

Number 9 will be back up to Bicester on Monday, I am sure I can't do any worse :)) rl;

I scrolled down the messages hoping for the long anticipated announcement BM - come on - you're not trying hard enough! Or the spirits of the Romans are playing games with you. Shame you can't do the next dig tomorrow - Monday looks a bit wet....As a believer in fate, I'm beginning to think your fibula is eventually going to come up locally, where you least expect it.... but I'm probably wrong as usual. Best of luck!

Somewhere down Digging Lane... My Roman Quest

Post by Bargeman » Mon Apr 02, 2018 7:57 pm

Number 9
Image
So today was number nine in my quest for a Roman fibula, and or a Silver roman coin, and the roads took me to North Oxford and a trip out with the Metal Detectives, on to some seriously wet pasture x; But a little rain wouldn't dampen my spirits, finding I had a hole in my boots tried though! But I carried on, as I was sure I was close this time. But as it happens not close enough.
That being said I did have some decent finds, and I think I probably did better than most ::g

I started the day swinging the CTX and 17" coil, and my very first signal, had me digging a mini pond ten inches deep, the hole filled with water as soon as I removed the plug, but the signal was still in the now water filled hole, so in with the probe, and sure enough there was a signal, so another spade full of mud, and out popped a very small Medieval bronze Annular brooch complete with pin..... ::g

Image

Image

By then it had stopped raining, so I went back to my van to unload the wet weather gear, and grab a bite to eat, I also took the chance to swap detectors over and give the Nox 800 another run out, on my way back to the van I noticed one field was very quiet, so that is where I next headed, on entering the field I had a very high signal on the Nox, and after again digging a deep hole I found a large crusty Roman coin.

Image

Image

I then found a couple of much smaller coins, all the roman coins came from one small corner of the field, and not just to me, other people found some too ::g

I then found this strange strap end buckle thingy, with SC embossed into it?

I did also manage to find a few pre decimal coins, including a small coin spill.

Image

So I had a good day, I was on the Romans, I found a brooch, but my quest still continues ;)

I have to say I am really liking this new Nox 800, it is working well for me at this time, the depth is really very impressive, a few people on the field today were really quite surprised at how deep it was hitting targets ::g

The odds would of been stacked against you much more if you had set out to find a silver medieval brooch rather than a fibula but you found one ::g ::g
