Check before you chuck 11th C Book Clasp

Post by f8met » Wed Mar 14, 2018 9:15 pm

I had this in my finds box for a while and didn't think too much about it or give it much of a look apart from it looked oldish. I took it to the FLO who suddenly got really excited. Turns out it is a Anglo-Scandinavian book clasp, dating 1000-1100 AD. Always best to check!

Blowed if I can see it but
it has a pair of opposed dragonesque animal heads facing downwards, each demonstrating a projecting triangular ear, a circular openwork perforation to represent each eye, a prominently moulded cheek decorated with parallel grooves and an upturned heavily knobbed snout, the latter forming the base of the object on either side.

It is similar to a Williams Class A Type 1 stirrup-strap mount. Only one other of these has been recorded, SUSS-5AF9E0

Great result ::g

Always lovely when you finally decide to show the FLO something you've had for a while but done nothing about and they get all excited. ::g

(If it's any consolation, I'm having trouble reconciling your FLO's description an all :D )
Essential equipment:
Some sort of electrical gubbins(I'm told it's a Deus). In various colours

Lovely thing and well rescued.. I like the way you East Anglian folks are so casual about your 'usual' finds - and you consigned it to your 'finds' box? I'd have been jumping for joy finding summat like that! Planning to move to Suffolk / Norfolk now :)

Great find! I only today found out that a bit of what I thought was junk is a medieval belt buckle plate, it was in my junk pile and now turns out to be my oldest find yet!

Went off on a tangent ( as I often do :D) and ended up looking at the age of books. Eg.

https://theculturetrip.com/europe/unite ... the-world/

Which puts the clasp at closer to the oldest existing books in England... looks very Tolkien to me :D.

Nice ::g

I did a similar thing. At my first club meeting I took a box of what I thought were pretty unremarkable finds, and what I thought was a broken buckle was immediately identified by the Chairman and confirmed by the FLO as a 5th/6th C. Saxon Girdle Hanger :-O

I have been searching around the web for similar and there are 2 here. Third from bottom and the bottom ones are the closest.
