30h April 2018 - Lizzie 6p - b4 and after pics -electrolysis

Post by stubble hunter » Mon Apr 30, 2018 3:50 pm

Returned to the same rough plough field that yielded a superb denarius last week.
Two hours enough as the knees were going by then.. but right at the death up came this lizzie.
And like the denarius it was covered in hardened dirt etc. I suspect both coins had lain dormant until the deep disc plough brought them to the surface.
Before and after electroysis pics.

I had hoped a magnificent portrait would appear but, like most lizzies, that is rarely the case. :(
But more than happy with the find o.k. :)

Normally I don't like to guess on an ID for any find but I am going to take a page out of Allectus book and have a stab at Spink 2562 with the mint mark of a coronet ! Whats the chances I am wrong =))
Cheers all and hope some of you got lucky over the weekend !
John

Cracking job.

It will damage most things hence it has to be done with 'short, sharp zaps' then check and gentle wash with soft tooth brush. Rinse and repeat where necessary. I could have done a couple more zaps but I think the legend is a lot more defined when some of the crud is left on the coin o.k.
Everyone will always have a different view on how coins should be treated of course. Had it been a rare saxon or a viking for example I would have let experts deal with it. Too abrasive cleaning can have dire consequences for sure. I know someone who tried to flatten out a Cnut coin using 'annealing' (heat treatment). It ended up in 3 pieces. He was distraught !
Cheers !

I personally do like to see the dark and light contrast as oppose to a shiny bright unblemished surface ::g
