How to clean up gun money?

Post by Easylife » Sat May 12, 2018 3:52 am

This gun money James II shilling has a bit of detrimental slight surface crust. It seems to be made of a good solid hardy metal. I have only given it a cold bath and a mild ultrasonic clean so far but think something a bit hotter and stronger may be beneficial. So what is it to be? A few minutes of simmer or a bit of lemon juice? Any advice?

That is a nice one so not lemon juice, it will destroy the patina. :D

There are a few hints on cleaning in this thread, particularly quoins post, and plenty elsewhere:

I have coins where the patina has lasted a lifetime.

I always have a quality bottle of Nail Varnish with my cleaning kit.

Coat the coin, but not to heavily with the nail varnish.

Very quickly before it dries off work the coin between your fore-finger and thumb.

When the coin has a dry matt finish you are done.

Happy Hunting,

Jerry.

Never tried it myself but the freeze thaw technic is surpose to be gentle.

May try on something else first.

Yep as phil has said, this is one of those coins where a magnifying glass and toothpick/pin is essential in fastidious mechanical cleaning around the letters to bring them out.

do not think you will get the coin any better in dunking the whole piece it is more of scratching away at the deposits as stated above.

good luck Easy ::g Nice coin in latin. (did not know that james was pronounced jacobus on english coins). :D

Hi Jerry, Did you mean Nail Varnish or Nail Varnish Remover? Just thought it may be the latter.

Thanks guys, I soaked it in WD40 for a few hours then went over it with a toothpick which has made some improvement and will leave it at that. ::g
