Found a brace of Carausius coins yesterday - both with Pax on reverse; one minted Londinium the other Camulodunum... anyway, decided to try the distilled water on them for the first time... wiped most of the dirt of with fingers and put them both in a glass in about an inch of the water - swilled it round a bit(gently)and then re-swilled a couple of hours later, took them out and dab dried with kitchen roll.
I am convinced they have fared much better than if I had washed them under the tap - the definition and patina is really good and I have lost hardly any of the detail. I also bathed a fibula brooch with some crusty dirt and that came out beautifully too - Maybe I was going to see a good result even if it wasn't there but its distilled water all the way from now on!
