Interesting iron finds please help identify what they are

Post by Lily88 » Fri May 05, 2017 4:38 pm

So I've been detecting below dinas bran castle in Llangollen which was also an Iron Age settlement, I have found bits of slag along with the dagger shaped thing, and a small glass piece which was next to the dagger also a horseshoe shaped thing but it looks to thick to be a horseshoe and also has spikes coming from it 🤔
Any one having trouble uploading photos it says they are too large

Hi Lily88,

it's probably because your pictures are too large. You'll need to shrink them down.have a search on the forum as it's been discussed a lot recently.
It will be interesting to see your horseshoe thingy. Early shoes had much wider branches (sides) and medieval and before often had calkins. These are lumps on the underside of the shoe at the end of the branches.
Even modern day shoes can have screw-in studs although these are not very long. Alternatively, your spikes could be nails. If it's a more modern shoe the nails will be galvanised or even copper coated and last a long time.
Think we need that picture (with a scale too please).
