Head magnifying glass (cleaning)

Post by Roberts » Tue Feb 13, 2018 6:59 pm

I have acquired a pair of magnifying head glasses for cleaning coins and they are actually very useful and help enormously in cleaning between the coin/object details and getting those tiny bits of muck off.

They are not too expensive either and might help others who love cleaning and getting all the object details showing.

Link below to a few examples, you can probably buy them in town from a specialist store also.

Thanks for posting. Do they work if one has only one eye?
And that is a very serious question ... so no quips please. x; x; B-)

This type of thing does not depend on binocular vision - two independent lenses, one for each eye, so it shouldn't matter. Or if you've only got one good eye, there are plenty of these things available -

I did take mine out and test with one eye, (no offence intended) and they do work in using just a single eye.

Mine are this model and as you can see in the photo the left/right eye use a lens independently. (not just one screen length lens) and were fine for me.(using one eye).

Thank-you very much Phil, I have tried these but its very uncomfortable, and makes me very aware of my own physical limitations ... which I have learned to ignore. Its like I dont notice most of the time, but use one of these and my whole inner karma is disturbed. its a weird thing and hard to explain.

How can i describe it ... when I dont wear glasses my eyesight feels normal, but as soon as I put a pair of glasses on its like looking through a keyhole. if there was a single lens my brain wouldnt notice ... but its very hard to explain. And only those with one eye would know what I mean.
i started with two normal eyes, and way back in history it became just the one, my brain adjusted to one eye, though receiving partial signals from the other. its like you shutting one eye and looking through a pair of binoculars, your brain would be screaming at you that everything wasnt right, and thats how it is for me, even though I have one eye to start with.
I know it sounds weird, funny even, but that is the best way I can describe it.

I can understand that the monocle thingies are uncomfortable - I remember my old Dad taking his watch to the menders - the watchmender had one eye due to a war wound and as a small lad watching him I was amazed how he could hold this thing on his good eye for so long..he was however the best in the business.

Can't explain the karma thing - very interesting psychological stuff but not strictly on topic - but I guess it's something to do with right side / left side brain in conflict - doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things - you find stuff whilst detecting - that's what matters :)

Exactly Phil ... you find stuff with your ears ... so its a perfect hobby for the blind, i dont know why blind people dont do it (with the assistance of an able visioned helper).
edit .. the finds are also very tactile , another reason why its appropriate for blind people..

Has the RNIB or similar been involved in the subject as far as you know?
