1700 half penny too far gone?

Post by Shaneb3 » Tue Feb 20, 2018 8:10 pm

Hi everyone. I found this coin at the weekend, very excited as it's the oldest one I've found so far. Only been out a couple of weekends so far but already hooked. As I'm a completely new to detecting and way out of my depth on this one i could really do with some help. As you can see from the picture the coin is completely oxidised with no copper visible. There is enough detail showing through that I can clearly make out brittania on the back with the date and the head on the other side. The worrying thing is chips have started to appear on the edge of the coin. I successfully used electrolosis to clean up an 1820s farthing from the same find and I'm wondering weather I should try the same with the edge showing no detail or try to preserve it as it is. Just worried removing any oxidisation I might end up with no detail at all. Any guidance would be very gratefully received. Thanks ::g

Are you sure that it is a halfpenny? The size really would have helped. Anyway I think that it is probably William III. ::g Please do me a favour and gently brush out the dirt from inside the A by Britannia's shield. It looks as though you might have found a very rare variety which is missing the bar on the A. Don't get too excited though because even if it is the condition is against it! :D

Can confirm it has no bar in the A. Oh well it'll still be nice for me to have, have to go out and find another :))

I think you're right, Fred - I just magnified it and can see no trace of a bar on the A

That will be a William III then. Unfortunately without the date, which should be under Britannia, you will never know which one it is (can you make out any of the date numbers? If it is 1700 as you suggest then it is a less rare version of the error). If you get a chance look up Spink 3554 and 3556 to see the general type. :D

PS It looks like it is being held together by the patina. I wouldn't bugger around with it any more. Once completely dry a coat of Reaissance Wax to slow down the decay, if anything.

It's got a bit of bronze disease, any attempt at aggressive cleaning will see some more lumps knocked off of it! a bit of wax on it will brighten it up a bit. And good luck with your next search! ::g

The date letters should be relatively small so 1700 will do fine. ::g

I'm sure that you will soon find enough to get blase about them. ::g As in 'well Viking silver is always nice but I would have preferred a Guthfrith penny rather than yet another Siefred small cross one'! :D
