where to sell posy ring

Post by trampus » Mon Feb 17, 2014 6:18 pm

Hi there,

I've received a letter from the British Museum confirming that the posy ring I found falls outside of the criteria for Treasure, as there is not enough evidence to confirm a date of pre 1714 meaning therefore that I can sell it. Can anyone help me with regards to the best way of selling this lovely ring and how much it may be worth.

I've included some photos again for you to take a look at :-

Any comments gratefully received,

A call to one of the auction houses to start with I would imagine. Timeline Auctions always features well in the magazines and i would imagine, with the benefit of some of your fine photos , they will probably give you an estimate on price ::g

I got £650 from Timeline Originals for mine which was
a plane gold band inscribed with "Love The Giver".
Much plainer than yours, it was 22 carat gold with no hallmark
so I reckon you might get a bit more than that for yours.

did they say its not tresure or did they disclaim it... i got a similar letter today saying that they disclaimed it...
I think the first option would be a specialist firm like Berghanza, remember going to auction means you have to pay the auctioneer his cut ... as well as take off VAT

Give it to the landowner.......... by the time you've gone 50%/50% and paid auction fees etc it will be worth more to you in terms of local farming kudos than the £££`s.
Box it up, hand it over with the Treasure report and the generosity will be rewarded. Ying & yang and all that jazz. ::g

Give half of what you have left to the landowner after all "Costs"

I,m sure that he will appreciate it as most farmers need all the help they can get
and you will have enough funds left for a new coil etc.

In the end just do what suits you most

I am assuming that you already have an agreement withg the farmer where you give him x% of the value, and as for deducting costs, this would only be okay a/ if this is in line with any existing agreement you have with the farmer b/ there is no agreement but the farmer is happy with the arrangement anyway...

This is one situation where you simply cannot do "what suits you most", that is unless the farmer has relinquished all claim to the item.

Good luck, in what ever you do.

Hi Oldartefact,...yes sorry about that. Thanks for you info. Iam waiting for a date when i can go and pick my ring up from Lauren at the Great North Museum.Think ive to wait up to six weeks for return, so only a couple of weeks to go. Ive made a few e-mails to various places.Berganza seem to be interested ,although Timeline and a couple of others seem to think because of the dimensions, little weight and rather bland insrciption that it would be worth much...so iam toying about now wondering what to do.Will keep people informed when it does sell. Thanks for you interest. Trampus

It works like this at Auction ... The buyer has to pay about 20% + VAT to the auction house ... the seller has to pay 15% + VAT to the auction house... so lets say the buyer only has £1000 in his pocket, and wins the bid ... you will only get about £600 in your pocket .. the differential being Auction house fees and VAT.
So a much better way is to contact the buyer direct... and do a deal ... in the above case if you sold at £800 direct to the buyer, then you and the buyer would be quids in..
As far as i know there are two main buyers of posy rings in the Uk ... Berganza and Wartski, so my advice would be to give them both a call and go from there.
