Looks a great find for them, some speculation that the digger was unsure to dig the signal or not.
Bet he is glad he did.
well done.

A lead bag/bucket was found deeply buried on top on a mounded area. The FLO got involved straight away. The area was cordoned off by the organisers. The dig went on very slowly for most of the day. Lots of documentation made at each stage. News soon reached other members of the dig and a small crowd was watching all day.

By late afternoon the lead covering had been removed and around 25/30 bags were filled with coins. These medium sized bags filled a Sainsbury shopping bag.

Everyone was taking it in turns having their pictures taken alongside the hoard.

An amazing thing to watch. ::g

yes it was pretty amazing to actually see a hoard being dug ::g
the finder was using a deus and it was an iffy signal a bit like iron so was going to leave it ...but he called one of my clubmates over to check the signal with his fisher and he told him to carry on digging ...so they dug down onto the lead lid and lifted it and found 3 cnut pennies so everything was stopped and and done properly from then on ::g

They will be declared treasure and locked away in some vault before going on display in one of the larger museums. Hopefully this will mean that the prices paid for individual Cnut pennies should stay as they are now. If it is true that there are up to 7000 coins then the value has to be a least £1 million plus so it will interesting to see what is the final valuation. I do hope the finder is one of our members and gets around to posting his account of events and more pictures. :)

5 years ago many detectorists were saying the Xp Deus was not going to make it.

It would be little use on hoards etc etc.

What price now ;) :) Jerry.

I'm outside Old Trafford and there's a guy burning small effigies of Rooney and selling them to fans. Oh, hang on. It's a baked potato stand.
