Eyes only find

Post by Fishwick » Tue Jan 09, 2018 1:53 pm

I was out on our clubs Xmas dig and I spotted this interesting object (eye) looking up at me as we were taking turns to get over a gate. I stayed behind to look at the blue eye and wondered what could it be? I could see that it was slightly curved and with the tip of my spade I popped it out of the mud. It was broken, heavy and made from what appeared to be glass- dark blue glass with a creamish swirl in it.
I showed it to one other club member and put it in my pocket. Cleaned all the finds when I got home and couldn't stop looking at the blue glass object.
Showed the find at the club meeting last night.
I was wondering what the forum thought about it and if there's any way of finding out more about it. Thanks

Hey fishwick
Looks like the kick up of a ‘black’ glass wine bottle
Hard to say ..the photo is a bit of an optical illusion!
When I say kick up I mean the indent on the base of a bottle
If so could be a hand blown pontilled bottle.
Cheers the noo ::g
The view from the photo maybe shows the inside surface of the bottle
If I’m right.. :D
the photos like an Escher drawing x;

I'm seeing the outer mineralisation of a piece of chert/flint

I've took some more photos at different angles.

Looks like a blob left over from glassmaking now.
Interested on what others think....

Might be the remains of an electrical insulator from a power line that has had a serious problem? :D

It looks like 'flint' to me too. The real clue as to whether it's flint or glass will surely be decided by it's weight. Otherwise, I'm stumped :( Regards ss47
