Radium lid

Post by Dave The Slave » Tue Apr 02, 2019 2:41 pm

Had the chance of a one off shallow bottle dig in an area of the permission, where I had previously seen bottle remnants on the surface in the undergrowth..
Really warm day, half mile walk, carrying detector and spade.
Most finds were in the leaf mould, rather than the clay sub soil.
Nothing old, would say 2nd half of 20th Century, fish paste jars etc.

Couple of interest were the the Radium screw top lid. Seems to have been one of those cure all " Quack " remedies.Image
Also a little " Art Deco`ish " perfume bottle, staining was where the original contents were still in there. 52mm x 46mm x20mm. Lid is plasticky with an octagonal insert.

Cheers all ::g

If your lower jaw falls off now, you'll know why! :-O

(Google "Radium girls" if that's a bit esoteric)

Radium was how x-rays were discovered (Marie Curie) and it was a popular novelty cure - until it became apparent how dangerous it was and everybody died horribly! :D
