Lets see you best paste pot lid

Post by oldartefact » Tue Oct 30, 2018 7:52 pm

In my school days at a 30k a year boarding school, we were always bunking off up to the dump near "The Huts" ... a few of the keener lads would come back with amazing pot lids.. think that the coloured ones were the most sought after.. but never found one myself..
Would love to see the "Creme de la creme".. from your pot lid collection

Good idea,
Unfortunately I have precisely no pot lids left at all.
Never was very lucky with them-a half sized bears grease
Would be my highlight, and it’s long since down the road :(
Cheers

edit .. seem to remember that one of the school masters would ship us out to some of the more distant dumps, when we should have been doing prep ... hey ho ... thats the sort of education you get for 30k ,,, a real education!!! Thank-you that man!

I dont have any lids to bring to this show and tell session sadly
But i am curious and would like to ask a question if i may

Twice you have mentioned your £30k education, which i fail to grasp the relevance on a metal detecting site, in a sub forum on bottle digging and a thread asking for photos of a paste pot lid?

If its a game of top trumps you are looking for then i'll play.....

It is relevant because one would not expect that £30k would buy one an education in real life (ie. Bottle digging) and there is always a twist in the tale, because I got my quarter million education for free... just like bottle digging. Think that would be hard to trump, but willing to play :) :) :)

There are at least a good couple of dozen pot lids amongst other delightful items underneath a large hedge in the grounds of an old convent school which we dug from the old tip and dumped there because we couldn't take them home . That was in my early teens , so a generous 30 odd years ago or more .
Might still be there but I doubt it , probably a carpark or new housing over the top if it all now .
Wish we had the good sense back then to bring it all back with us . Hindsight is a wonderful thing !
I walk , I dig , I find ....naff all !

Thats the way "our" dumps went ... all gone now ... under ubiquitous housing estates, the only reminder of our now long lost and probably best forgotten misdemeanors, being the scars carved into the back of my digits, if only my eyes were still strong enough to see them.. ::g ::g ::g OooO

Probably also worth adding that I was not, and am not a toff.. I come from a working class background, at school I was anti-establishment,I refused to tow the line, was insolent, useless at sports, a smoker, always in detention, avoided the cane by the skin of my teeth, and one of a very few not be rise to the rank of prefect (which is my proudest non-achievement, a milk monitor never to be thankfully). I detest everything a £30k a year education stands for, but I took what I needed, and a couple of fingers to them when I left. All that said I had a great time and was always at least 3 steps ahead of the establishment.

Here's a blury photo of the old chap from 1977 with a few lids in the display case,
Those were the days we'd peddle off to the local village tips or drive to the big tip at Oxford for the more exclusive posher finds like coloured lids, bears grease lids, college wine bottles & coloured codds etc,
Great times & wonderful memories.

Hi KB,
It’s a nice looking one-no damage?
If I remember correctly there are a good few variations of that one.

Priceless photo and exactly how I remember it .. In 77 I was in the lower 6th, bottle digging being replaced by girlfriends and beer! Digging has taken a nose dive since those heady days, but so good to see the resurgence in interest,, memories and pot lids are what life is made of!

That would be telling B-) B-) B-) ::g , but my experiences are all non-fictional.. pot digging and growing up go hand in hand... but I never grew up!!! ::g ::g
"must try harder"??? The best I got was "is this a flash in the pan or a sign of his true abilities?" .. that was the final nail in the coffin for me... And i spent the rest of my school days bunking off and having the best time ever!!!

1977 , teenage years , Punk Rock , The Jam etc and all those other exciting interludes that finally saw the demise of bottle digging gradually fade away . Great days indeed and a long time ago but the reignited interest in bottle digging has reared its head again but I wish I was ten years younger !

No damage , just the usual surface crazing . I am amazed they survive intact .From memory , the bountiful amount we dug at the old convent school were all minty , no crazing or burn marks only because there was no burning on the tip . Just a big old pit which was soiled over once full .

That’s a nice one-quite desirable too
Especially with the gold banding nearly intact.
Maws lids alone would make a nice collection.

A beauty, and a very rare lid I was lucky enough to dig a few years back. Sadly, long since departed my collection due to financial strain
