Free introduction to archeology course starts 6th March!

Post by Oxgirl36 » Wed Dec 21, 2016 11:52 pm

Thanks to colinj70's post viewtopic.php?f=50&t=85866" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I've noticed that there will soon be a free 2 week course called Archaeology: from Dig to Lab and Beyond

It''s 3 hours study for each of the 2 weeks, so 6 hours in total. Sounds like a great introduction to knowing how our archeology friends approach a dig. Personally knowing how to preserve the site and record any details of an important find (if I'm ever that lucky!!) would be invaluable. For that type of investment of my time I think I'll get a great amount of knowledge.

If you register now they'll tell you when the course is scheduled. Assume enough registrations of interest triggers it being scheduled. So if you're interested please do register. I'll report back on how good it is after I've done it.

Just been looking in a bit more depth at this and see that under the Courses option there is a list of 242 new or upcoming courses listed covering a wide range of subjects, so if this course does not interest you some others might do so. Most are 2-6 weeks and only 2-6 hours per week so not a massive commitment in time.

I also noticed this page https://www.futurelearn.com/learning-guide which might well help anybody doing this course, or any studying for that matter.
"Make your learning fun and effective with our free e-book - 60 pages of study tips and expert advice from learners and educators."

The metal detecting community is fast becoming "Community Archaeologists" Many possess years of experience and knowledge in dealing with small finds ID for example. They may not have letters after their name or attended a graduation ceremony but they are a valuable source of ID reference for many museum staff.
Good to see some interest in this topic and that there are lots of other learning options available for study. Liam OooO
