PAS Database. What3Words

Post by Jungle » Mon Oct 09, 2017 1:25 pm

I was under the impression that Non-Protected find locations were only identifiable by Parish.
However I've noticed that if you click on the What3 Words reference for a record you get a 3x3m map of the find spot. It does not appear to be that accurate but could still attract undesired attention.

Is this a resent change or have I just missed it in the past?

The findspot is "obfusicated" around a 1km square so What3words can have the wrong starting point to begin with.

I tend not to worry as most of the stuff I have recorded has been found and isn`t "there" anymore. ::g

Don't think you would have to worry about a 3m x 3m area in Norfolk, last items I recorded they reckon they only record to field level, nice to know just after I'd taken the trouble to get grid references.

The 10 digit NGR is only visible to bona-fide researchers what we/the public see is more restricted. Our FLO won`t record finds to Parish/Field level but will add "to be known as" which limits who can see what. ::g

Pas are currently working to remove the what3words link from their database, due to the concerns raised by a number of detectorists and FLO's, ::g ::g

What I was getting at in my post was that the FLO didn't even want the NGR as they only record to field level anyway.

The problem comes when it goes to the coroners court if a treasure case and the local media are there..Amazing that the local media obtain all the info and then plaster it in local press including info of the farmers name and location ;;z ;;z
