Lost Engagement And Wedding Ring

Post by AnthonyK » Tue Nov 05, 2019 2:28 pm

Hi everyone,

I was hoping someone might be able to help us. We were on holiday at a fishing lake in Lincolnshire last week, when my wife inadvertently threw both her engagement and wedding ring in the water! They didn't go far in, and landed by a reed bed, in around 3 feet of murky water (we know roughly where they landed).

As it isn't a river, we are assuming they shouldn't have moved much due to currents. I believe there are detectors than can work in that depth of water? If anyone could help in retrieving these we would be very grateful.

The landowner was happy for us to get someone to try and retrieve them (although there may be restriction on which days).

Any help, or advice, would be much appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Anthony

Hi Anthony,
Sorry to hear about your loss. There is a facebook group called "National Ring Recovery Service" that may be able to help.

Detectorists from all over the country are registered and there are some amazing recovery stories.
You may find that you get some local eager beaver, who is looking for a splash in a lake.
Good luck,

Sorry to hear your story.

By the comment "in around 3 feet of murky water" and it being a lake I suspect that it might be a muddy bottom, unfortunately this combined with the depth would make it unlikely that a detectorist would be willing to try wading to detect for the rings. So this will significant reduce the number that can help you.

However there are people that dive, often using wet suits, and detect so the cause is certainly not lost. Good luck, and fingers crossed for you.

Evan

My sincerest commiserations ... in my case .. the wife threw hers into the neighbours garden .. only problem being that there was 12inches of snow!!! Luckily they were on holiday .. after a quick trip to Tandy (it was the early 90's) .. got me a £13 detector... 3 days on, I recovered both rings. The snow had melted by the time the neighbours got home from holiday, so my embarrassment was saved.
I am sad to say that the odds of recovery are very very very slim in your case... better do the gallant thing and buy a couple of replacements... saves alot of trawl, for likely downstream "writing on the wall".
Still haven't figured out why she chucks the things every time we fall out over the "tea menu" .. maybe there is some one out there who can explain.. before its too late!!!!!

Probaly the slightest of things!!! Like disagreeing over the time to boil an egg!!! It happens .. to be honest I have lost count of the reasons why my Mrs has thrown hers .. including through the window of a moving car.!!! Only they know why they do it ... and its habit forming!!! Marriage aint easy!!!!

I would be quite happy to give it a go but for the fact I live in essex, one kind soul has offered, I would take them up on it, and hope you get them found.

Yeah, ignore the marriage guidance Anthony. I hope you find some help, but a tough ask in the water... especially at this time of year. ::g

Its not marriage guidance ... chucking rings is a reality.. one ring is just about okay... but when they do both.. that can make one's eyes water. In my case just the one eye, as I am half blind!
The tandy detector gave up the ghost about 8 years ago.. and luckily I have had no need to use it since. But rings thrown into moving water ... or onto the Middle lane of the M1, are always going to prove a challenge. Better to take a loss on the engagement ring, and buy her a stonking eternity ring... believe me its a cheap investment!
In my case I got away with a less than stonking one!

Thanks everyone for your help and guidance; and I really laughed at some of the replies!

Her hands were cold and they fell off as she threw some bait in the water (we were attempting to teach the little one how to fish). She is of course devastated (the rings are 20 years old), and we will do our best to get them back - hopefully it isn't too "silty" at the bottom.

I'll let you know how we get on!

Thanks again,

Anthony

Look at the other side. If Anthony does retrieve them he'll have brownie points to spare for years ::g

Boat, or better still punt. Fine mesh, wide front landing net and take out large scoops of silt. Then rinse through the silt or borrow a pinpointer. And you can do a pond life lesson with the youngster in the process - even more points :D

Good luck.

They are definitely covered by insurance, but it's more about the sentimental value to be honest.

shouldn't be too much of a problem for someone with a waterproof detector.

I would be quite happy to go to knee deep but waist deep is getting close to the electronics in the control box.
