V5.2 test and tips

Post by Oxgirl36 » Sun Nov 11, 2018 6:18 pm

Ok I’ve tried v5 and hated it so went back to v4.1

I tried v5.2b, as it was meant to sort everything out (erratic and noisy coil with ghost signals) but it was a disaster.

I went back to 4.1 again.

So, considering my elliptical coil and v4.1 were finding me some great stuff and was very happy with it, why attempt another go at v5 anything? Well only because I have an X35 staring at me shouting why have you spent over £300 on a coil you aren’t using? Indeed, why am I? So with a pasture permission, that I think has deeper finds on it, I uploaded v5.2 on Friday.

I also, as a test, uploaded the ultimate programme which I moved to 4.3khz and added boost. I also saved the hot programme (my normal detecting programme) again at 4.3khz with signal boost. I threw on the X35 coil.

What did I find out? Well the hot programme is impossible to use with this coil. It will send you completely mad in less than a minute. It is very, very, very noisy. It is horrible ;;z

But with the ultimate programme it is useable. And actually I settled in with it very quickly. It seems to amplify big iron noises. But equally coins are blow your ears off loud. I was finding edwardian pennies at a good ‘height of a pointer’ depth with very, very strong signals. It is still sparky but not annoyingly so.

I didn’t put the elliptical on to try it with v5.2 but it behaved ok with the beta version so I don’t think it’ll be an issue.
So if you have an X35 try the Ultimate programme. I suspect the software will be further refined, it certainly needs it to allow other stock programmes like Hot to be used.

I will leave it on v5.2 for now and see what I think as I use it a bit more. For big deep targets the X35 is impressive. I note I dug not a single small target though. Might just have been this field but i suppose with such a low frequency it is to be expected. When i get the time I’ll do an area once with one coil and then go over it with the other. It’ll be interesting to see what they both find. Horses for courses and all that.

Still love my elliptical coil best though =))

When using HOT program did you just use it as it is ? You say the noise was driving you mad but did you try to alter the discrmination to maybe -4.5 . Ground noise can be unbearable using HOT but if you alter the discrimination until the ground noise is no longer noticeable you may have a more pleasant experience.

To be honest I was just seeing if the X35 was useable or not with basic programmes. I’ll play with sensitivity, discrimination, etc. on another occasion.

In my view though stock coils should be useable without modifying stuff on ground that is pretty clean and with low mineralisation. I know how to make programme changes now and understand how things work but a new detectorist wouldn’t.

Although with previous versions of this software, even with sensitivity dropped it was a nightmare to use. This newer version of v5 seems much better ::g

Glad to see you are making some headway with the X35 coil Cath. Will be interesting to see the 2 coils pitted against each other, keep us informed.

On some field I have to decrease to -2 to don't get overwhelmed by the noise. But the coins really sings! Now the only thing that puzzling me is that yesterday I found a crotal bell not even that deep in a stoney pasture that with elliptical coil was giving a very weak signal. I can't quite explain this.

I'm sorry to hear that your still having problems Oxgirl. With the problems I've been having with my X35, I honestly regret buying it.

I had to update to the V5 software to accommodate the new coil but seeing as the X35 turns into a raving lunatic on wet grass, I can only use my old coils.

However, using my old coils on V5.2 good stuff often gives bad signals and bad stuff good signals, its really frustrating.

If I could turn back the clock, I would still be using V4 and I would be £380 better off!

That’s normal for crotal bells with all machines - they have the slit at the bottom, two holes and are hollow - it’s a bad mix for a good signal. I’ve met a few people who have said they were surprised how poor the signal was and how they nearly didn’t dig it. Maybe why finding bits of them is easier :D

Actually I didn’t have problems with it today, with Ultimate it behaved very well. The grass was very wet but no problems with that either. In fact it was pretty long in places too but it wasn’t an issue.

As you know I’ve had a major downer on this coil and software for a bit now but I am now at least hopeful ::g

No way would i walk around a field for six hours using a pre set programm if it drives me mad .As i am a new detectorist i decided to watch a lot of videos from the expert ( Gary Blackwell ) and he explains things so well, he even says alter settings depending on your field conditions ::g

Sorry Oxgirl, I obviously hadn’t read your post properly. I need to stop moaning as I have arranged with the supplier to send mine back for testing as it could just be faulty. When it works, it’s been great.

Glad you are starting to see some positives oxgirl, I’m back on 4.1 again. I have given v5 a go and decided 4.1 and my standard coil works better. I am in two minds wether to buy a standard 13” coil new while there is still some stock available or just live in hope my x35 will come good in future updates.

I have decided to keep my deus full with remote,ws4 headphones,11” standard and 9” hf coil at V4.1 for ever more, well for the foreseeable anyway.

And instead of getting rid of my x35 13” coil I have bought a second set of ws4 on v5.2 to use with the x35 coil in a deus lite set up. So I now have a full deus 4.1 and lite 5.2 be it with only the one shaft.

:-L

If you could load several versions on to your remote at the same time and switch between, say v4.1and 5.2 at the touch of a button, how great would that be. The best of both worlds.

Here's a tip , sell your x35 coils ::g
I know I should but I have a nagging doubt that the moment I sold it Xp would realease a new software update and it will be all hail the x35.

I know someone who swears by V2, they said they would prefer V1 but can’t get it now apparently.

What about ground balancing?

Ok went on my favourite field today. The x35 on completely standard Hot and it worked beautifully. Tried it on standard Ultimate again too and again behaved beautifully. Increased khz on both to the top one (25 kHz or whatever it is) and again stable and worked well.

Basically working as it should ::g Great depth with a vicki half penny clearly ringing out at over 6” in heavy clay soil on ploughed field.
