Deus frequencies...?

Post by HolzHammer » Tue Jan 08, 2019 7:29 pm

Evening All,
I have been using the Deus for close to a year now and have really enjoyed the learning curve and the stuff I find with it.
My request is for advice on frequency ( and I don't mean how often I should get out which is not often enough!). I understand the basics - from the manual, videos and experience of course but still don't really fully understand what it all means fundamentally - I generally used my old coil on 12khz with some success - and the 17/18 kHz definitely seemed more sensitive to smaller targets but my question is when to use the even higher frequencies available with the 35x coils and will I be seriously compromising the depth I get? Conversely, is one always going to miss the tiny targets running 8khz or does one have to simply be more aware for the signal that kHz gives for said targets?
Yours confused from T******** W**ls
Any advice much appreciated!
All the B
Alexander

I use around 26kHz but reduce reactivity to 2.5 on hot and got great depth. Last weekend I was regularly digging half pennies at 6” plus down with very clear signals (8 in 2 hours). Have also previously had hammered pennies at pretty much the same depth and even tiny lead pellets.

Next time you get a target change the frequency and see if it would still be detectable. Be interesting to test both ways - detecting with low kHz and switching to higher ones and the other way round. I’ve found small iffy signals become much stronger at higher kHz on the few times I’ve tried it ::g
XP Deus !!£$ I use the HOT programme on 17khz, reactivity at 2.5 on v5.21 with the X35 11” coil

Thanks Oxgirl - very good advice - I'lll try your technique tomorrow!
I do switch between frequencies on a target sometimes but often it seems to make little difference - because you know its there, you listen out for something whatever!

I normally run 12khz with the older 11" coil in V4.1 and often switch frequencies when I get a weak or iffy target. But more of the time I find that it is then not quite as good. 12khz seems a good all-rounder and will likely not miss anything that you would hear in 8 or 18khz.
Weak deeper targets can often be enhanced by lowering the reactivity, but increasing the sensitivity, whilst maintaining stability, will make the most difference.
For general searching a few tweaks probably won't make too much difference but by making adjustments over a weak target you will get a better understanding of their effect.

The general theory is the high frequencies are better at finding small targets near the surface, low frequencies larger targets deeper down.

There are of course a lot of settings that can altered on the Deus as well as the frequencies but my experiance with running it "Hot" is that a 9" HF coil running at the high frequencies has done well winkling out items such as nail cleaners and small grots on a Roman site that I have gone over and over with the 11" and 9" coil at 18khz. On this particular site I wouldn't expect to dig more than a couple of inches anyway due to the amount of iron contamination.

The 9" HF has also proved great at finding cut quarters on dry planted ground in the spring, again very close to the surface but then they are very small targets and I wouldn't want to be digging very deep on planted ground anyway.

To get a definitive answer though really requires two or more Deus's set up with the different sized coils and running at different frequencies comparing their signals before digging the target, but even that would only be a comparison dependant on the ground conditions on that day.

I hope this dosn't take your query off topic and incur the wrath of the mods but with the price of the new coil you are not far off a second hand detector that can run multiple frequencies.......

I run the same set up as Easylife. I can't run the 11" at 18 on my land as it is too chatty and I suspect that's why the HF coil I had was too noisy for me but I can run the 9" at 18. I still find quarters, admittedly not very deep but then I am not sure many people find deep quarters.

9 days into the new year and it has started already. Nearly as bad as the vegans =))
