Another great read thank you, I also found an Irish halfpenny of the same date and like you I was amazed at the condition. After a little research I discovered they were made from the very best copper unlike the English coins of this period.

Deus Digger Diary Day 67: Deus v4 Field Test + Review

Post by samuraitrev » Mon Mar 20, 2017 7:36 pm

Here's the details:
Date of hunt: Sunday 19th of March
Location: Derbyshire. (B____'s Dig 2), (3 field survey).
Ground: ploughed (med mineralization, high iron contamination, high hot rocks)
Settings: V4 HOT
Detector: XP Deus with 11" coil. (v4 version)
Hunt Time: 8 hours.

Intro
Hello and welcome, my name's Trev and I hope you enjoy another edition of my diary. I hope to inform and entertain you with my particular style of blog. My raison d'être is to find a gold coin. I pray you are sitting comfortably in your study on an easy chair with your feet up. Perhaps with a drink of your choice in hand such as a glass of Remy Martin Louis XIII Cognac and nibbling at portions of foie gras. From the comfort of your own home you can read of my daring exploits in dark, dangerous and downright deadly Derbyshire. Before we get to this review and field test I want to tell you I'm not an 'expert' I'm not even sure many detecting 'experts' actually exist (except, obviously, manufacturers) . I have been detecting for the past 22 years and have owned a variety of detectors such as Minelabs and loaned many others. So, I have some experience but no actual qualifications in metal detecting apart from perhaps an NVQ in Lowest Find Rate 1990-2017 :)) I'm not a Deus fanboy. I will be absolutely honest on what I think.

Field Test of the XP Deus v4
Today you've joined me to test the Deus v4. I went to this location because these fields adjacent to the ones I'm on today were really difficult to detect on. In fact, Ironman went on to enigmatically say, "I'm not goin' there. It's rubbish!" Admittedly, it's full of iron, hot rocks and trash but that's all part of the fun, right? I have switched from 3.2 up to v4 and the new improvements/changes include 2 new programs called DEEP (Program 6) and HOT (Program 9) both listed as PRO settings in the updated v4 manual. The HOT program actually has -6.4 Descrimination. Yes, you read that right. You can now detect dark matter! I jest but this baby now hits everything. If you previously thought Gary's Hot program was a hot setting then this is a whole new level of hot. Think of comparing Theresa May to Angelina Jolie then you get the idea. :)) If you can't stand constant buzzing (perhaps you have a phobia for buzzing sounds: Deushotbuzzaphobia) then you may not get on with this setting. However, if you've been using Gary's Hot in the past or full tones then you will be pretty used to this. If you're a newbie, this setting may overwhelm you because the feedback is pretty much constant. My advice is go for the quiet life and detect on GMP program but if you like to hear everything and you can put up with LOTS of buzzing then this is the setting for you.

By the way, I'm not knocking this setting at all. It's absolutely amazing! O:8 It doesn't miss a thing. I've found tiny fragments of gold plated jewelry. The smallest musket ball I've ever found plus other little objects from respectable depths. I would say, in truth, I didn't get any small obects any deeper than 5" but larger objects such as buckles were coming up at around 9" May I remind you that these fields were pretty much no go areas before with the Deus and a T2. This machine has absolutely improved since 3.2. A very fast user interface skips between settings and programs much faster. More accurate tracking (changes to match the ground more frequently). It's more acurate on iron and hot rocks (I didn't get fooled by a single one. In the past, I was constantly digging them. If this detector can get by in fields like these it can hit anywhere.

Oscilloscope Visual Display Indicator
Now, picture this, as you're walking along to the constant, quiet buzz of minerals and iron contamination then a high tone PINGS out. You check the Oscilloscope (which is an X+Y grid) and it has a diagonal line from bottom left to top right. Straight away you know it's a non ferrous target (doesn't contain iron). Go dig it. For 8 hours it was never wrong. Yes sometimes it was foil and I did dig the odd large bit of Iron that sneaked through but this VDI is rock solid. I would trust this more than my oldest confidant. Yes, the Deus is a tonal machine and yes always dig the high tones, especially the faint ones but it gives you so much more information than the bouncing numbers on v3.2. It's hard to explain, unless you've seen it. Watch my video later and you'll see. Get v4 and use this setting on difficult ground and I could put (imaginary) money on you'll find more goodies, even on land you've hammered.

DEEP Program Field Test and Review
I tried to detect using this 8khz setting but to be honest I don't think this land was suitable for it. It's got way too much Iron, mineralization and trash. It couldn't cope with this area and the signals were constantly blasting through. The Oscilloscope was scribbling all over the screen like some demented, scribbling demon. After about 2 hours I came to the conclusion that this program is basically unusable in this areas this bad. I'm pretty sure this setting would be a beast on quiet, pasture with little mineralization and iron and pull up some good finds from depth. However, I must stress my own bottomless ignorance and naivety. I've been using the Deus at least once a week for the past few years but I'm still completely new to these 2 programs. I just wanted to share my findings as I saw them.

Final Thoughts
Are these new settings going to change the way I hunt? Yes, they are. I'm still going to be true to the wonder setting known a GMP but when the going gets tough (loads of Iron + mineralized) I'm bringing out the killer setting known as HOT. I'm looking forward to trying DEEP again on pasture and I will share my thoughts when I do. Take a look at what turned up and take note how tiny some of them are. I've enjoyed writing this and I hope you've enjoyed reading it.

Great write up - thank you! I've held off on moving to V4 after the coil frying reports. Recognise it looks sorted now but by then I'd been furnished with paint and a brush and had been set to work on painting the house. One bedroom completed and the second half way through left no time for detecting ;;z But intend to sort it out this week and do the upgrade.

Sure I'll hate the HOT programme as Fast sends me mad with the constant buzzing in my headphones without adding a full hornets nest to the mix. It's a personal thing I recognise but I love GMP so why change? But excited about the better tones and the new screen. I still dig far too horse shoes :-L

Looking forward to the video later - be good to see it in the field. And like the shamrock ;) very fitting on St Patrick's weekend.

Great post Trev, well done on that scrap of gold, that coin with your name on it will be out there somewhere ::g

I agree hot is great in the contaminated areas and dont mind digging the scraps of foil and lead as if you ignore those signals you are leaving the thin silver and small Roman coins behind.

I have also played a bit with the GMP and deep programmes, when I go on a new field I will start on hot as that is giving me so much information and it tells me where the iron is which is where people have been and the finds are likely to be. On the quieter areas I will switch to GMP, and if its really quiet to deep but checking some of those signals with hot once the first spadeful is out of the ground.

I dont get on with tracking because where there are a lot of hot rocks it tends to balance to them and then you miss those small signals, I can usually pick them out by the tone but if you look at the XY dispaly they tend to have a flat signal. If you are used to the tones from Garys Hot I would say that the XY display looks like the sounds you are hearing but would be useful when you are getting used to them.

Thank you for an honest informative post, I have not updated to V4 simply because most of my searching is on relatively clean pasture and my ears are as finely tuned as they ever will be to a tweaked version of GMP.

On the odd occasion I am on ploughed or stubble which has a high iron content then I do switch to fast although I have not used it sufficiently to be fully confidant in the tones, which suggest the XY display would be beneficial.

I wait with bated breath for the gold coin, which I am sure you will add to your collection one day.

Yes I loved the read... entertaining as always ... and with a pint of Old Empire IPA under my skin ... please forgive the odd spilling mistake! Talking of Old ... I am an old stick in the Mud... yes I love the idea of a display that compliments my analytical thought process... we want numbers and a visual, so the new display has both, which must beat hands down that rather insulting horseshoe!!! Never figured out why that put a horse shoe on the display,,, it grates me every time I notice it!II
Its a bit like a bite detector having the pic of a minnow on the display!!!
Now I was out the other day and a fellow detectorist was telling me how much silver he had found since the upgrade... but the funny thing was that on the day I found a hammered and he didnt, so despite the upgrade Mother luck still rules supreme!!!
Lets hope that V4. turns out to be a killer upgrade... only time and finds will tell.

Nice finds there Trev, not had time to come on here much so didnt see the Irish coin, lovely, I found one but it was hardly IDable.

Like others I find the honesty and down to earth finds pretty refreshing, back when I was on FB it seemed like everyone only found perfect Hammies and gold staters...Im jealous, I'll admit it! But you never saw the normal finds, its all or nothing for me, the good and the bad. :E

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'll be out testing again on Sunday on a different site. One that I'm hoping will produce. Thanks for the good wishes for that elusive gold coin they really do spur me on. Thanks to everyone for reading and commenting. I read every comment and I'm on here every day (if I'm not out detecting this is my next port of call).

Happy digging everyone and a huge thank you to my new subscribers. I'm going to improve my videos with a new camera very soon so hang in there. Right off to bed to dream about what the next hunt may bring! ;)

Deus Digger Diary Day 68: V4 Finds Victorian GOLD RING!+Silv

Date of hunt: Sunday 26th of March
Location: Derbyshire. (L____'s Dig 1)

Establishing good relations with the landowner
Hello and a welcome to another installment of Deus Digger Diary. I went to meet the landowner and he told me all about the land. Such as an old farm was once on the land which was demolished in the 30's. When building a new garden and house he found some huge gate posts and trough. He told me all about which areas had been landscaped in the past 40 years and where pathways were. He also showed me the tree where buzzards were nesting and the male was definietely telling us to clear off in buzzard language. There were sheep and cows in the adjacent fields and I assured him I would keep an eye on things. He showed an interest in my detector and I even let him hold her. It felt strange letting another man hold her but in the interest of good relations I felt I had to turn a blind eye ;)) As it transpired he told me he's very good friends with other farmers. Some of which have land next to a church! He said he'd have a word and I should be able to get on the fields. It's amazing what can be achieved just by spending some time chatting and getting to know people.

Where to Choose?
This is a huge area next to a village and I wasn't sure where to start. There were areas of pasture that were wheat fields in the distant past. There were also tree covered areas that were so dark there was little growing at ground level. I decided to start at the highest point of the permission that overlooked the village. In the past I've found these areas to be quite productive. I set the Deus to HOT just so I could hear what was under my feet and there was a moderate amount of iron and mineralization. I decided to keep detecting on HOT to ignore the ground conditions. Any iffy signals I checked with GMP or DEEP.

A Promising Start : Coin Spill!
Well as soon as I started getting signals there were a few coins (mostly modern) but I got a loud beep just under a patch of weeds. Out came four coins. At the time I thought they were just crusty half pennies but upon cleaning them up when I got home 2 of them were silvers, well 50% but hey I was still very happy. I tried GMP in the same area and got a 5th coin too! It just shows that the lower reactivity and higher discrimination allows the Deus to be able to punch a bit deeper and see the targets better. I hit some really small targets such a bits of dress jewelry and even an air gun pellet. I kept finding bullets too. Some of them were live although after research I think they're toy bullets as they've got Mettoy stamped underneath. I found a nice enameled badge with MATLOCK on it. I would love to know what the badge was for though. Many other interesting finds appeared throughout the day such as a George and Mary Silver Jubilee medallion 6th May 1910 turned up. A Cat's ID canister withe the address and name still written on a piece of paper. Also a lipstick that looks like it's from the 30's that once would have been held on something as it has a small copper ring at the top. Plus loads more coins kept me going but nothing could prepare me what came next...

At Long Last, Some Gold!
I was deciding whether or not to pack up for the day but some little detecting angel whispered to mine ear. "Once more unto the lines dear Deus, once more" I had been on my way down the final row when a nice high BLEEP sang to me like the soft sigh of a lover. I dug down thinking,
"Hmmm, this could be a little silver coin." I was delighted to see a small ring before my astonished eyes. Even at this point I thought it might be silver until I saw the hallmarks. Luckily I got my reaction on film which you can see in the video. I'm so happy to have found some gold. I phoned the landowner (who is now thinking of getting a metal detector) and he came to see. I asked if he wanted it but he said I could have it. I researched it when I got home and it was assayed in Birmingham in 1891 and made by Oetzman & Co.

Final Thoughts
What a first hunt eh? I'm definitely going back there as soon as I can. In fact if I didn't work full time I'd be there every day. I bet there's much more to be uncovered and I hope you've enjoyed taking a look. Until next time everyone. Keep digging, you never know when the find of a lifetime may appear!

Hi Trev, followed this a bit later on. I have also moved to V4, not really noticing difference as yet but maybe more effective in certain ground. I notice that you are finding that V4 is more accurate on iron and hot rocks, do you mean sound or numbers? The coke I hit is either 25-27 or jumps all over a 70 number swing, but behaviour is a fair giveaway. I find large iron can be a bit difficult, buzzing with a quite clear ping, sometimes masking a non ferrous target, sometimes not. How do you find V4 on those? Nice write ups and a great gold find, you are approaching your goal, best of luck. :D
