Buying second hand; genuine machine?

Post by Mac91 » Mon Dec 04, 2017 10:57 am

Hi all,

I currently looking at buying a second hand ctx, standard pack with a spare battery.

I'm just wondering is there anything I can look for to ensure it's a genuine machine? I know there are lots of fake detectors out there, I'm not sure if it's a major problem or not with the ctx. Is there the likes of a particular serial number to look for as there is with some pinpointers?

On another note, are there any things in particular I should look at to ensure it's a sound working machine if it is genuine?

Thanks for any help!

When spending a very large sum of money its worth going to a reputable dealer who will stand by the detector. ;) ::g Jerry.

Have to agree with Jerry regarding getting one from a reputable dealer. The magazines and dealers' websites have many to choose from, often with decent warranties remaining.
Essential equipment:
Some sort of electrical gubbins(I'm told it's a Deus). In various colours
Jenkins

There are fake ctx machines e.g.

https://www.prospectingaustralia.com.au ... hp?id=9747

Search "fake ctx" (without quotes) to get an idea.

As new fakes might not be listed, imo either buy from someone you know and trust or a reputable dealer.

You can do a basic test yourself... does it false signal when shook, compare an air test to one online etc. , but no guarantee... dealers might test and give a short guarantee on a machine if you took it to them?

I certainly agree with the above advice re buying from an established dealer. ::g
Apart from the obvious help and advice available as part of the dealer's customer service, you will very likely be given the opportunity to 'part exchange' towards the CTX.

Then of course, there's the added benefit of a possible part ex deal. ::g Add all this to the dealer's own guarantee given with most second hand detectors and it suggests the way ahead! ::g ::g
Hope you get your CTX. Good Luck - Regards ss47

Fair point all thanks for the help. I originally had no notion of buying second hand/private but it seems like a genuine sale. However the thought that it might break down after a month or 2 or not work 100% was niggling at me.

Couldn't find any used/ex demo from the major retailers so I may hold off till one turns up! ::g

Exactly. I looked at the second hand market for my CTX, but the asking prices were only £200-£300 less than the new price, so I bought new to get the peace of mind of dealer back-up.

As it turned out, my CTX arrived with a screen fault and the dealer immediately exchanged it for another one ::g

Same my end, I looked at several second hand machines, and then a few popped up around the 1000 mark, which obviously is very good, and it seemed to good to be true, the machine looked new and was already brought from someone else, as you say, something was niggling at me so I left it... And got a new one like you say, peace of mind...
Warm regards

I have been thinking the same, although not yet decided on the ctx.
Where is the serial number located? Most companies are happy to check SN but not sure if there is a customer number that would give u a quick turnaround. You could ask for SN prior to viewing?

Its very late now due the Christmas holidays but normally you can cal, Minelab and ive serial number, they can confirm the number in minutes. The serial number also gives you the date of manufacturing handy if the seller srates its only a few months .

HOWEVER !!!!!!!!
Chinese copies usually have a real serial number associated with the real genuine product. They would get the serial number from a genuine product and use the same number on all the copy machines. Only way around this problem is to BUY FROM MAIN DEALER or someone you know if person.

I tried that when I was looking at second hand machines. No shops had a record, I guess you have to go through minelab, but there reply time is a bit on the slow side. I emailed 3 minelab email addresses (as I didn't know which could help me) on 21/11 for some advice and only 1 replied, and that was on 14/12, I have replied to that email and not heard anything back..

So my guess would be that it's not going to be worth attempting to check the serial numbers as if I was selling my machine I wouldnt wait 3+ weeks for a buyer to make up there mind. Lol.

Good luck though.
Warm regards

I took the plunge on a second hand machine, having had the serial number checked out by minelab Ireland. I was initially threw off after I had the serial on the rear checked out and no records came back; minelab then told me to send the serial on the back of the interface and it all checked out OK. Aparrently it's standard that these serials are different.

Picked up the machine today, tested it as much as possible there and then and all seems good. Now to learn how to use it!
