Post of the Month July 2012

Post by yellow » Sun Aug 19, 2012 2:10 pm

Hello to everyone :D

I suffered a little stumbling block with Poster of the Month, this time around as lately I have had to take a little time out due to personal reasons,so was unable to keep up to speed with the vast amounts of post's coming in Daily..
Last month we offered a "top 3" which were shortlisted for the title, but as said above iv'e been unable to commit as much as normal and have chosen a defined winner from the posts i managed to log..

The winner of Post of the month July 2012

Identifying Romano British Bow Brooches(a beginers guide)
by alloverover » Fri Jul 13, 2012 8:23 pm

I thought i would do this post as there was a bit of confusion the other night about types and classifications of brooches. The photos are mainly my finds although a few are not, these are just the basic types you can expect to find, not by any means an exhaustive list, i have gone with the order used by Richard Hattatt in his first book, Ancient and Romano British Brooches.
Dates used are a guide, obviously there were early examples and some brooches would of continued to be used far longer than they were in fashion.

Brooches are the most common Roman metal finds after coins, so it is quite possible you will find them if you haven't already,

La Tene III
From around 50 BC to the 3rd quarter of the 1st Century, so its pre Roman invasion, worn by the Britons if you want to call them that, a Celtic brooch, made from a single piece of copper alloy.

Colchester Type, 1 and 2 Piece

The post continues in-depth so please view link for full info

Outstanding post which gives lots of help to others on our forum..good info for those who manage to find these little buggers.....no me neither =)) but this post was very well received by our members for the time and knowledge taken to produce such a great piece..

I promise normal service will resume asap,so till then keep posting and we'll all keep reading and learning....

Cheers Yellow c'
