1 year test of Skellerup Quatro Wellies.

Post by Jungle » Mon Oct 13, 2014 3:34 pm

My water proof walking boots had a “commando” sole which after 5 paces in the wrong conditions attracted so much mud/soil that I needed a cowboy leg spread and thigh muscles like a power lifter to move.

Last year I started research trying to find boots which had a “self cleaning” or “mud releasing cleat”. I complied a short list of the usual suspects easily available but a search brought up Skellerup from New Zealand. Having spent quite some time in NZ, I was familiar with the brand and the quality (a tree surgeon mate brought back 3 pairs of safety boots back in 2004) but the range is now available in the UK.

I contacted them about suitability for metal detecting, in particular how tough were the soles for all that spade work and was there enough flexibility across the toe for the kneeling down/recovery stage . I was assured tough and flexible rubber upper so I decided to try the Quatro thermal version. 1 year in and probably a 1000 holes later the soles are unmarked, as are the rest of the boots. I’ve been out in -5 in our mild winter (claim is good to -50c) and toes have been warm. I’ve also warn them in late spring and feet did not get hot as the air can circulate around the calf, best of all the mud sheds away from the sole so my silly walks are over. They are also very comfortable and offer enough ankle support for me. They also have tabs on the heel to help get them off after a session.

One word of advice if you decide to take the plunge, they are a little on the large size, so order next size down or wear a thick pair of socks to fill the boot.

Just been looking at the whole range and to be able to get neoprene boots for less than £80 is brilliant. And they have arch and heel support too. My husband's Muck boots are just starting to go so I'll recommend he tries these. Thank you ::g

Seem them as low as £62 on an auction site.

If I ever need to buy another pair, I'd get a size smaller. I wear a thick pair of socks to fill them out but in spring/autumn when it can warm up after cold starts, they can get a bit too warm.

I don't know how they compare weight wise. Bound to weigh more than plastic ones as I think they are 100% rubber apart from fibreglass shank.

Had mine for over a year now and they are great, I used Muckboots for years but I rate these better,,,and they are cheaper, somehow they dont make your feet sweat as much as Muckboots, this is where I got mine and they have a sale on at the moment ::g

Post by fred » Wed Nov 22, 2017 6:31 pm

As wellies go these seem very good and after a couple of months I am well pleased with them. ::g

They are well insulated and it doesn't feel as though the spade is going to slice though the sole and take off my toes anytime soon.

They are considerably heavier and chunkier than normal wellies. If you do buy a pair get them a size smaller than you normally take otherwise you will overheat in normal temperatures because of the thick socks that you will have to wear. :D

On the strength of the above good reviews of the 'Skellerup Quatro's' I ordered a pair tonight.
They should fit the bill for both my detecting and dog walking.

Many thanks to 'Jungle', 'alloverover' and 'fred' for taking time out to add their respective comments. ::g Regards ss47

I still rate them very highly but if you wear them a lot put them somewhere warm to dry out between uses. If you just leave them in the car boot condensation may build up inside. ::g

I wear mine for work a lot, most times I leave them in the back of the van and they dry out ok but I would always leave them in the front to dry in the daylight if I remembered, certainly wouldnt worry about any special measures to dry them and in my opinion they dont sweat up as much as other insulated wellies ::g

Probably better ventilation in the back of your van than in the boot of my Fiat Panda. :D Only noticed a problem when using them for five or six days in quick succession anyway.

Just thought I'd add my thoughts on the 'Skellerup Quatro' wellies which arrived 4 days after ordering. They are at first sight, total quality both in materials used and manufacture. 'Skellerup' and members of the forum advised ordering one size smaller than my normal shoe size so size 7 duly arrived and were worn for the first time at our last 'club dig' on a day of biting cold wind combined with driven rain, lovely!

I can honestly say that after a couple of hours it was time for a 'cuppa' and whilst sat chatting to others I suddenly realised I had completely forgoton that I was wearing new wellies!

The insulation is so effective, that only 'thin' socks are required to be worn otherwise you risk being too hot underfoot! An excellent product which is as comfortable as any slippers!!

Thanks once more to all who posted their opinions on them. ::g Regards ss47

Re: 1 year test of Skellerup Quatro Wellies. Oh Dear 2 Months RIP

Post by fred » Sun Mar 18, 2018 11:08 am

My nice and expensive Skellerups have been Fredded. ;;z

They didn't last more than a month or so before I realised that something was wrong. What I thought was condensation turned out to be a leak coming through cracks in the sole. It slowly got worse until one day I washed off all the mud and found the problems. Turns out they couldn't stand the strain of all that digging, even though my spade has quite a large foot plate to press on.

Even the cheap ones usually last longer than they did. A real shame as they really were very warm. So now the search continues. :D

Why not take it up with the distributor? Mine have completed at least 234 days of digging. I'm about to buy the non-insulated version but am aware manufacturers sometimes lower the quality of a product so I'd be interested on thier opinion on the fail.

Hello Fred, I'm surprised about your Skellerup Quatro wellies failing :-O If I may, I strongly advise contacting the point of sale in redress as they were used for 'one or two months'. Even if the period of use was longer, it would be reasonable to expect them to last, not only to the guarantee period but well beyond that date! Get on it Fred, it's well worth a go ::g Regards ss47

I had a friend coming over from NZ so have managed to get hold of the Quattro Non-insulated. The NZ version has a guide line to cut them shorter if needed.

Same build quality but without the neoprene lining. Also dropped a size to 8 and perfect fit for me (usually size 9). Test driven and just the job for warmer but damp conditions.

Had mine for over a year now and no problems. The un-insulated version does get condensation inside if not dried out but I would happily recommend them to anyone looking for quality wellies. ::g

Just got back from NZ after visiting my daughter and forking out for new Skellerups for the grandchildren from the Farmland store.

Red Bands are still the preferred option over there - I got myself a pair - just got to wait for the muddy season now to see how they perform.
