What do you mean by bn/bnp position ? I've not heard that term before...Usually you get a grid ref off a GPS and that's fairly easy to put on an OS based map..

can you export a gpx file? there are many programs that can load them and display them on maps. I believe Google maps (create your own account) will import gpx.

Some will import and/or export cvs files. Have a look and see what format you log file is in, I've not heard of bn/bpn either.

Hi, I’m not sure what you are asking either, but if you can expand a bit I am sure we can come up with some ideas and possible solutions ::g

The Flo once when I gave her some details couldn't understand where I'd got it and said we don't use that I'm sure that one had ° marks on it so I reverted to the other setting....prob got the GPS that s totally wrong for here knowing my luck ! Should of turned the 3030 geofind thing on from day dot and have at least 3yrs of finds reference instead of what could be 15 pages of rubbish .... just thought after 10 yrs on same farm ort to now be able to build up a picture of where the coins are coming up beings we have part of the farm back again ... thanks... mines the old yellow one just led screen

With the older hand held GPS units, you have to configure them to use the correct "Map Datum" and possibly the type of out put you want ie lat/long or OS grid references ect...If you didn't do that correctly, you may well be goosed....

Ok, I think what you need to do is the CTX gives you a Latitude and Longitude measurement like this

51.000000, 0.1000000

If you put those types in to this web site

https://gridreferencefinder.com/#

It will give you one like this

GB 1282848378

That’s the system that FLO’s use

The web site above also does batch conversions so can do a lot in one go

It’s an older model, and a bit limited against the newer ones, but as far as I am aware it is all good, just not sure how much you can adjust or transfer on it as I went for the later series Garmin GPS.

Hopefully someone on the forum will know that model and be able to help ?

I am sure it will do what you want though ::g

"BNG" is British National Grid and is what Garmin call the OS Grid ref system..So that would be one correct setting for here in the UK..

I am not a 100% sure about the rest of the figures, but I think amounts to "Basically British National Grid", the Grid Letters TF followed by your two five figure strings which are your Eastings and Northings, which together make up a 10 figure grid reference.

In an ideal world, this ten figure grid ref gives you a coordinate down to the nearest meter grid on the ground...In practice however, civvie OS maps and your GPS are not that accurate, so at most, you want to change the settings in the GPS to give either an 8 figure ref (10m grid on the ground) or the more usual 6 figure ref which narrows it down to a 100m grid on the ground.

Best ask your FLO which of these they want...

That's handy... I've now looked at various o/s apps but all I can see is it'll give u a point on a map but you carnt do multiple's and save to say start again another day.... the next option might b old school and a map and divide the squares up to suit.... I just wanted a quick ish feed the numbers in and save and onto the next point.....cheers

In my opinion Memory Map is the best OS software. On a PC you can type in a grid ref. or long/lat ref and it will place a flag at that location. You can mark routes etc. as it is mainly for walking/rambling. The expensive bit is the OS25 scale maps as they often cost £300 for the whole of the UK but are offered on occasions for as little as £100 & can be used on 5 devices, phones (not iphone/ipad), tablets and pcs.

Because they use true GPS they are often more accurate than aGPS and are stored on the device so don't need data or internet connection. I've used Memory Map for 14 or more year.

I'm new to the Metal Detecting game, but I was wondering about what (I think( is being asked....
I wanted a simple way of mapping my meanderings, and pinning points where finds have been located...
I have a stand alone GPS unit - The Garmin Legend. Although (I believe) the next model up from the e-Trex that you pictured, it still was fiddly and never really did exactly what I wanted.
I spoke to a few more experienced detectorists and spent a while researching.....
And came across

http://historyhunters.co.uk/tectotrak-ios

Not everyones cup of tea, I expect, but it seems to work for me...
I always have my phone with me, (An Apple iPhone, but works with Anderoid also) so a gps unit is another bit of kit I dont have to carry.
I won't go into what it does, as its all evident on the site.

As I say, maybe not for some, but it fits the bill for what I want...

Good luck

You don't say whether you're an Android or iPhone user, but if the latter, there's a major update of Tect O Trak for iOS in the pipeline - should be released in the next week or so. (I've been a beta tester, and the latest build is super-slick.)

Good, innit? Some excellent refinements, especially the ability to export the database to an easily readable standalone file.

The only significant feature still outstanding on my own wish-list is to be able to tap on a set of coordinates in the Finds list and jump to the precise map location, but that'll be implemented soon enough, and otherwise the app's got the lot.
