Grid Refs
Hi, folks
I was wondering how members provide grid refs to their FLO. Do you use an app on your phone or a hand held device? Do you just use a grid ref website? Can anyone recommend a good hand held gadget, pref not too pricey?
Thanks

Re: Grid Refs
iPhone compass gives coordinates. If you can’t find it it’s in “extras”
Also look up how to look at metadata on your pictures. That should also contain the GPS location which is why you may not always want to share original pictures!

Re: Grid Refs
To quote our FLO (last night) "so long as its in the approximate area, that will do" ...
So its official, no need to go to the nth degree, a pin in the map is all that is needed, with or without the use of a blindfold.

Yep, I used to use that to locate the findspot as an afterthought. It's really easy to use, just 'Get the marker' and drag it to your findspot. Tick the 10m square at the top as FLO's grumble if you only give them a grid ref to a 100m square. I think there is an App for it also. I mostly use a GPS device now though.

Re: Grid Refs
I use memory and the grid reference finder mentioned above. I don't record in the field unless I take a pic on the phone which is gps-enabled.
Strange thing, I can rarely remember my name first go but when it comes to finds I know exactly where they came up.

Re: Grid Refs
Maybe that's because you have found the finds but have just not found yourself yet?

Thanks, everyone. Yes, I've been using a website, very easy as you say. Guess I'll stick to it.

Re: Grid Refs
As posted above I just take a photo with my phone and quote the GPS data plenty good enough.

Re: Grid Refs
I guess it depends on how accurate you want to be. I only use my phone for calls, but I did use a Satmap Active 10 for Fell walking - very accurate, but expensive and I couldn't be arsed to lump it around detecting.
Given that I can pretty much remember where I found anything significant anyway, I use the site mentioned above to record for my own records, but I use a very simple 6 digit grid ref site for the items I give to the FLO: http://www.oxon2030walkers.org/gridref_tool.php
Ample for their records (100 mtrs) if you are security conscious. One screen, scroll to the site, click on the 'spot' and the ref appears.

Re: Grid Refs
Strange how we remember find spots. I’m much the same although greenies tend to blend into one another. Never needed an app. Just find it on google earth.
I’ve noticed I remember dogs names, as well, but not thier owners. All depends what our brains consider most important I s’pose.
