below is quite a long list of instructions to help set up the etrex 10
Not sure if this is the same for any other models ? you may want to copy and print?
If it helps this is how to set up the Garmin etrex
I struggled with it to start with due to inadequate instructions that come with it!
This is how I set up mine for UK and use it, don’t worry if you get it wrong as you can always reset back to factory settings.
Toggle Button is the selector for up, down, left, right and press for select.
I will use “Toggle” or “Press” in the descriptions
Turn it on, ideally you need to do a bit of setting up before any use and get familiarised to how it functions.
On the first screen
Toggle to “Setup” tab, press and toggle to “System” tab, press
In Satellite system press and toggle to GPS + GLONASS & press
Toggle to WAAS/EGNOS, press and select on
Toggle to language and change Language, to whatever your language is
Press the back button
Toggle to “Position Format” tab and press (by now you should know how to toggle and press to move and select)
Position format should be changed to “British Grid”
Map Datum should be “Ord Srvy GB”
Map Spheroid “Airy”
Press the back button
Go to Display Tab
Adjust backlight timeout to whatever timeout you require, (Stays On will use more battery power) you may want to have “Stays On” while you set up the etrex
10. (Should have put this first, hopefully you have read through and done this already???) Toggle to Adjust contrast to your liking.
Remove unwanted tabs cluttering the screen, do you really want the “Man Overboard” tab? this is what I have left on the first screen on mine (when starting)
Mark Waypoint, Waypoint Manager, Track Manager, Active Route, Trip Computer, Satellite
Compass, Setup, Maps (tip 1), Where To? (tip 2) & Profile Change.
You can remove or add as many tabs as you want or need, don’t worry if you remove they are not deleted just moved.
On first screen press Menu, select Change Item Order, toggle to remove items, press and select either Move, Insert or Remove.
Selecting Move, press and move to where you want and press, then toggle to another and press, etc etc.
Insert will add pages removed (you won’t have any until you have removed them!) so that is how you get them back as well.
Remove, does what it says, but you know where to find them if done in error.
That’s the basics done, you’re ready to go. For use in the field, turn on, go to Satellite tab and press, give it a couple of minutes to acquire the satellites.
Select Trip Computer and press menu, select Reset and press Reset Trip Data, select Yes Press back, and back, select Track Manager, select Current Track and press, select Clear Current Track, press and select Yes, press Back.
Select Waypoint Manager, if this says No Results Found press Menu, select Delete All, select Yes and press.
Press Back, you are now ready to go, everything is zeroed.
Select Mark Waypoint, (to mark your find) this screen shows you your
Waypoint Icon (you can change this icon by selecting and choose one of your preference) Waypoint number, 001, 002 etc.
Note, press to input text (if you do this it takes time, I will explain later, (tip 3)
Location, SU 99999 BNG 99999 (I’ve used random numbers) This is your Easting and Northing, a 10 figure location to 1 square metre. (Around buildings and under trees this may not be that accurate?)
Elevation (metres above sea level)
At the bottom of the screen Map and Done, Map selects a map, shows you track and waypoints you have recorded, on the etrex
10 just a blank screen with track and waypoint, unless you purchased with maps loaded. Don’t worry I will explain later also, (tip 4)
Press done to mark Waypoint One, it then defaults back to first screen ready to mark the next waypoint. When you have done for the day turn off and its ready download, or save the data and start again.
1, Maps, this shows where you are showing Track and Waypoints, use the arrow buttons to enlarge or reduce map size.
2, Where To? Helps you navigate back to; Recent Finds, Waypoints, Tracks, Coordinates or Cities.
3, Instead of inputting notes just accept waypoint number, put find in bag and mark with number, you can edit data later when downloaded.
4, you might like to download Basecamp, it’s a free programme here http://www.garmin.com/en-GB/shop/downloads/basecamp
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
that you can download your etrex
too, here you can edit waypoints, once saved, selected and viewed on Google Earth.
Save in Google Earth and you now have some data.
5, if it goes flat, replace batteries and data is still there where you left off.
6, its water proof, so rinse under a tap.
7, dirt sometimes gets in the toggle switch and makes it difficult to toggle,
8, sometimes toggle and press response is slow, it’ll get there eventually.
Take you etrex
out for a walk, around the garden, down the street and occasionally select Mark Waypoint. Play with it, get used to it.
My guide is not comprehensive, there’s lots more functions, you will find once you play around with it.
Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.
