Garmin Etrex 10/20, a warning......

Post by Bambamsdadda » Sat Feb 10, 2018 8:10 am

Morning all, had a bit of an issue this week purchasing an eTrex 10. To keep the story short, I bought an eTrex 10, went to put “BirdsEye maps” on there from Garmin to find that it’s not supported on the eTrex 10. So I took it back and exchanged it for an eTrex 20x. I can now use the ordinate servey powered BirdsEye maps.
Next issue, I bought a subscription to the above mentioned maps from the Garmin website when I had the eTrex 10, that’s now useless as I have the free one with the eTrex 20x!
I would have liked to stems the extra £2 and got the satalite version of the maps had I have know what I know now!

So to recap, if you want an awful poor detail map, to plot way points, record your track (where you’ve walked) and to swap that info back and forth with google earth/maps, then the eTrex 10 is perfect.
If you want to all this and a little more with a colour screen and detailed OS style maps and / or satalite maps, then the eTrex 20x is perfect.

Hope this helps someone out there.

Good post, I went for the 10 as don’t use any of the maps as I import all in to Google Earth. But as you say if maps are needed the 20/30 are the better options ::g

Also for others don’t forget to check out the price of those maps as not cheap.

Hi, let me know the format as I have converted many types, yes the FLO/PAS use a strange one, I use the 51.00000, 0.100000 type ones for most, but have found online converters to many other types

Junior

What map settings do you use on your etrex

The settings i use are

British Grid
Ord Survey GB
Map Spheroid
Airy

this gives me when downloaded in to BaseCamp a OS grid and 10 digits

Example SU 12345 12345

Though I haven't yet used it for metal detecting, I have the etrex 20 and have found it to be great. I also have the larger GPSMAP 64.

I use them both with OSM maps that I downloaded for free online.

Free Apps worth a look for that and other things

Grid Reference (one touch OS reference for where you stand)
Polaris Navigation (offline/online maps with markers, route tracking etc)
GPS Status (accurate gps pin pointing for marking spots etc, wait for it to triangulate off 20+ sats for super accuracy).
