Hello Dave, I take it you are not testing the machine in the house or Garden ? this would be quite normal if that is the case ?

Hi Dave, those centre lines are perfectly normal ::g the reason why sometimes you do not get a target ID is because the target is a little outside the range of the Racer being able to decipher what the target ID is, just too deep etc

So not testing in house or garden so it's normal in the field then sorry not sure if that's what you meant in your initial reply, thanks again for the explanation on the two bars.

Hi Dave, if your out in the field and you detect a target and the two bars are still showing it simply means the target is too deep for the machine to accurately predict a target ID on screen.
As for the gain you could quite easily drop that to around 60 65 without losing much depth which would help with some of the chattering ::g , You may have very highly mineralised ground, you may have some outside interference like electric fences, mobile phone mast or something other, maybe your mobile phone is causing an issue if you have one with you.

as its second hand check inside the coil cover make sure its been cleaned out, and as mike said your phone ? put in airplane mode or switch it off ::g . could also be a green waste problem ;;z

neil.

i would also try a manual ground balance

By the machine being second hand and you not knowing about the display bars I wonder if you have seen the manual.
The Makro Racer 2 page is here and you might find some bits useful and if you do not have the manual you can down load it http://www.makrodetector.com/racer-2-m ... ctor.html as with most pieces of equipment the more you read the manual the better chance you will be able to get the best from the item.

As mrix said if the machine can not make and ID of the target you will just get the audio, but if a shallower target the bars should show a numeric ID for the target metal - take it as a guide rather than certain ID - if it jumps arount it can be an alloy / 2 metals or pushing the limit for a good ID.

Its a decent machine so all the best with it.

Notch out 96-99, this will quieten the machine and you won't lose and worthwhile targets, unless you come across a buried copper hot water cylinder that is! Also don't ramp the sens up too high, you don't really gain any more "in soil" depth past 40, but you can hold the coil higher off the ground at higher sens and still get a signal, good for stubble.

Essentially higher sensitivity boosts the audio response but doesn't actually give you more detecting depth. Bury some targets and have a bit of a play!
